Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

thank you!!

Thank you momjr.

I just posted the following comments in the Tulane University forum and thought others in this forum might be interested in learning about my experiences:

"We’ve just returned from four fabulous days at Tulane, visiting our freshman daughter for Family Weekend/Homecoming. The previous week was filled with fun activities for the students, concerts, fireworks, a quad covered in in snow (courtesy of the engineers!) and much more. The weekend included a Town Hall, music, a full-scale carnival, food trucks, tailgating, football, and much more.

The one “takeaway” that I especially want to share is that EVERYTHING Tulane hosts is FIRST-CLASS in every respect! It’s clear that months of planning goes into each and every aspect of every event. Every contingency is considered. The student population is diverse and my impression is that all demographic groups feel that they have a “voice.” Perhaps this explains why Tulane students are perennially ranked among the “happiest” in the country.

As a parent, I have a strong sense that my daughter (who is 1,100 miles from home) is attending a university where she is far more than just a number, she has easy access to adults who seem to genuinely care about her physical and mental health and well-being.

I’m happy to answer any questions from a parent’s perspective that students or other parents may have
"

Sounds fabulous - thanks for posting.

Just wanted to share this from the Elon Hillel FB page:

Friends: in response to the terrorist attack that occurred in Jerusalem earlier this week, Hillels across the world (starting with American University) are participating in a campaign to post their favorite picture of Jerusalem with the hashtag â€Ș#‎MyJerusalem‬. Post away, and feel free to tag Elon Hillel as well!

@fretfulmother‌ you can apply EA in addition to an ED app, but if I get in to my ED school I’ll be withdrawing all other applications. And I applied early to a fair amount of rolling schools: Indiana, Pitt, University of Cincinnati, and Tulane.

@skeliz - thank you! Ok, I think I didn’t realize there were so many Rolling, and I think I also got confused by EA vs. what I know now is “SCEA”. In the dark ages when I applied, I think on my list only the UofI was Rolling, but it looks like now there are a bunch of privates as well (or maybe there always were and I just didn’t know). My DS16 is planning to get some of his applications in early, hopefully most of them. Some are state universities, which should be largely Rolling if I understand this correctly.

And then it also looks like for some of the SCEA, you can still do Rolling at public, but not private (?) colleges. Like you could apply SCEA at Princeton and also send in your application early to UMa to get consideration for FinAid on merit as “priority early”. But, you couldn’t also simultaneously apply EA to MIT.

An update on boys3x - after making some wonderful progress the past few days - she had a terrible setback yesterday afternoon - serious infections - causing extremely high fever and seizures. She was moved back to the ER of the local hospital and remains in intensive care. The concern now is for additional damage caused by the extremely high fever and seizures. I’m praying for her and for her husband and 3 sons.

thanks for the update, @Rockvillemom. We’re thinking of her.

Such a crazy rollercoaster - thankfully - she is doing better and pushing through this latest obstacle.

Hope everyone is ready for the influx of college students returning home for Thanksgiving over the next few days!

Glad she is doing better.

I just read that Wellesley College abruptly fired its Hillel staff last week and Jewish students are feeling unsupported. I can’t post the Haaretz link because it requires a log in, but if you google it, you can find the article.

Thanks for the update, RVM. That is so sad.

Re Wellesly article - very disconcerting, especially after this winter events at Vassar. I would hate to pay so much money for my child to have to deal with it on campus. Maybe public colleges are better in that regard?

Anyone had experience with a program “Write On for Israel”? It trains high school juniors/seniors how to advocate for Israel (probably in time for their college years).

Thoughts and prayers for boys3x - 2 steps forward and then 1 step backward? Hope for more steps forward - and a happy Thanksgiving for their family.

I think my son #2 is done with applications. Only one rolling admission program but at least he knows he will be going to college next year (U of MN accepted him but it is not that high on his list). OSU (we are oos & would need scholarship $$) is still his first choice. Don’t know much about the school - other than that he & my H loved it on their visit. I imagine it has a fine Jewish population & presence since it is SO huge! Now we just wait - while he applied EA at all his schools he still won’t hear until January or February. Trying to put it out of my mind.

Hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving with your families.

I’d like to hear more about events at Wellesley College - anyone have more details? This is all I could see of the Haaretz article:

"Wellesley College fires Hillel staff as Jewish students face upped anti-Israel activity

Jewish students in Wellesley College dismayed by abrupt firing: ‘We lost our support system, we’re on our own.’"

“NEW YORK – Soon after the new school year got underway at Wellesley College, posters bearing the images of Palestinian children who were killed or wounded during the Gaza war appeared on dining hall walls.
And this job opening was just posted today: Rabbi/Director of Wellesley College Hillel

Here’s an article:

quote — Soon after the new school year got underway at Wellesley College, posters bearing the images of Palestinian children who were killed or wounded during the Gaza war appeared on dining hall walls.
A large poster, likewise sponsored by the new campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, went up in the student center asking, “What does Zionism mean to you?” with lots of space for people to fill in answers. Within a week people had written “genocide,” “apartheid” and “murder” on the poster at the Boston-area college.

Upset, Wellesley women turned to Patti Scheinman, Wellesley Hillel’s director, and David Bernat, the Jewish chaplain, along with student leaders of the Jewish community, for support. They jointly pushed for a meeting with Wellesley’s SJP leaders.

Both Hillel employees were abruptly fired last week by Wellesley College, with administration officials offering “restructuring” as the reason.

Wow. The entire article is worth reading. This situation sounds very unsettling and uncomfortable for Jewish students at Wellesley.

I am also keeping boys3x in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

This is very disturbing to hear about Wellesley. From what I can gather, the anti-Israel voices are quite loud on some campuses, and also in the media. Many students have never been to the middle east and their understanding of the cultures and religions of the region is based only on what they have read and heard.

Article from the Boston Globe today. It doesn’t make sense to me why they would fire the staff so abruptly in order to hire a full-time rabbi in 10 months. There’s more to this story that we don’t know.

Thanks for posting this - I agree that there must be a lot more to the story.
