Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

<p>Does anyone here have any experience/thoughts on Jewish life & resources at Haverford/Bryn Mawr?</p>

<p>My daughter is a Junior at Haverford. There is a Chabad on campus it is used for 3 schools, Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore. There is also a Hillel on campus.</p>

<p>Wanted to wish everyone a very Happy New Year - and also - a quick update on boys3x so that we can keep her in our prayers. This is copied from a posting by her husband:</p>

<p>"Boys3x has been recovering extremely well from surgery. She was evaluated yesterday for readiness, and today was approved, to move to the National Rehabilitation Hospital and is waiting for a room to become available. This is tremendous news as NRH is the best rehab facility in the DC metro area. Hopefully a room will become available tomorrow and she can be moved in time for the new year.</p>

<p>Today she had a basic eye exam by two ophthalmologists at Washington Hospital. She clearly has a limited field of vision in her left eye, and has complained of double or triple vision when she wakes up. Her left eye does not close fully when she is asleep and the docs found that she has dry eye. They have prescribed a salve for the eye to be administered before she goes to sleep at night. They also recommended that she have a full eye exam two weeks after she moves to NRH. The docs said that weakness in the left eye is common after a right brain hemorrhage. The extent to which the problems with her vision are correctable is unclear.</p>

<p>She has talked to several friends on the phone in the past few days. Being stuck in bed all day long for many weeks has started to make her really restless. Once she starts receiving intensive therapy I think she will be much happier. She is very determined to walk again and to regain the dexterity in her arms and hands so that she can do the things that she most enjoys
"</p>

<p>^^Thanks for the positive update, RVM! Happy New Year to you, your family and all posters too! ;)</p>

Thanks for the update and I hope boysx3 continues to make progess towards recovery. Happy 2015 to everyone.

Hi all, I’m just returning back to this forum after my daughter’s first semester at UMiami. She is loving it there. If anyone has questions about it give me a shout.

My son is a HS junior so we are on the hunt once again for the right fit. If anyone has a computer science student who loves their school and program please let me know. S1 has very good stats with a 3.7 UW GPA, taking 3 APs this year and got a 32 on his ACT. At the moment Northeastern is high on his list but we want him to have more options. He prefers to be near a big city so schools like Indiana, Delaware, etc won’t appeal to him. Would love some suggestions! TIA

Not sure what happened to boysx3 bc I haven’t read back that far yet but hope she is doing better soon!

Hi NYMom3kids, what else is important when looking for a college for your son- location ( area of country)? How about costs? Will there be any need for merit aid/financial aid?

What about Tulane? I don’t know anything about it, but it always gets high marks from kids here in New England. In fact, a couple of families I know have kids at both UMiami and Tulane! Northeastern has come a long way in the last few years
it’s become a very “hot” school and difficult to get into! They say that Northeastern & Brown are the two colleges that get the most amount of applicants. (Don’t know if that’s true or not, just what I’ve heard)

PS: Another is Carnegie Mellon. Shares Hillel building with Pitt. Right on the edge of downtown. Nice campus

Glad to hear positive news about Boys3x. Hope the new year bring more progress to a full recovery.

NYmom3kids: Here are some ideas from the midwest: your son may want to check Case Western in Cleveland. My oldest narrowed his search to Case Western (great merit aid) and University of Illinois (our state flagship). He ended up at U of IL & I have had buyers remorse ever since - he is now a sophomore & loves it. Case Western is in Cleveland. How about Northwestern? Great school - would be a reach but may be worth it? Also, University of MN is right in Minneapolis/St. Paul - He would get merit $$ with his stats.

Second son has his heart set on the Ohio State. He has been admitted to their Computer Science program (is Columbus a big enough city NYmom3kids?) but we did not hear anything about merit scholarship $$ yet. He also got into Miami of Ohio & they sent the merit award letter right away. Does anyone know when Ohio State sends merit award announcements?

Hope you all have a very happy, healthy 2015!

From our research, Tulane does not have a strong computer science program - you can double major in comp sci but it is not a major unto itself. Great school, though & lots of merit aid. Carnegie Mellon is always ranked at the top but they have about an 8% acceptance rate in their computer science program so it is a reach for all. Pittsburgh is a great city, though

Yes, chocchipcookie, Northeastern has come a long way in the last few years. Up 11 places in the US News rankings this year makes it a “hot” school for sure. Second son was just deferred - we’ll see what happens. I like the required co-op program but I’ve heard that can also cause some disconnect among the student population making it less cohesive. If my son gets in, though, I would still like him to consider it - Boston is a great location.

Tootired, OSU sends the scholarship letter about a week after the admission letter. My son’s were dated 12/13 and 12/20.

NYMom, our mutual friend can tell you all about Northeastern, if she hasn’t already. Comp Sci schools in or near cities, look at Georgia Tech, Maryland, Drexel, Rice, OSU, and of course Miami.

Don’t forget ga tech.

NYMom- maybe Stevens Institute in Hoboken, NJ (right across the river from Manhattan).

RPI, WPI, and RIT all came to mind, but I fear they all flunk the “near a big city” test.

Thanks so much for the great suggestions everyone. He visited and loved Northeastern and my husband is an alum so we know all about it. He really likes Boston too. It’s so hot that I’m thinking he’d have to do ED. I agree about the co-op making it a less cohesive school in terms of the collegial community feel. I’m not sure that he would care about that too much. He loves the idea of co-op.

Anyone know anything about UT at Austin’s comp sci program? Jewish life? What it’s like for an outbid stater there?

Keeping options open so location isn’t a factor right now save the “I want to be near a big city” factor. The school needs to be over 5,000 students. He doesn’t seem to want any serious reach schools. He is super bright and actually ambitious in a way but doesn’t feel that the ultra competitive schools will be a good for for him and I tend to agree. Merit aid would be great.

Chardo- are you in state or oos? Thanks for the information & congrats to your son.

@bucky0926‌ I probably saw your son, as the UMass Birthright spent several nights with the one I’m on, a regional trip.

@NYMom3Kids‌ UT Austin has a fantastic CS program and excellent Jewish life. I know some of the AEPi brothers at the University of Oklahoma have an annual trek down to Austin where they meet with UT AEPi to party and attend religious services. However it is very difficult to get into OOS and if Northeastern is a reach, UT will be an even bigger one. Additionally it will charge OOS rates with no merit aid.

Another option is CU Boulder which has great computer science, fantastic Jewish life (several CU students are on my birthright trip), and is in a phenomenal college town just outside of Denver. It could act as a safety school for him.

when when, he is still there as he extended until 1/9/15. I sent you a message to explain further.

Tootired, I am oos for Ohio.
