Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Since Wellsley administration is not commenting on reasons for Hillel staff dismissal, one is left to speculate that “more to the story” is not adding to goodwill/safety on campus. I don’t know, maybe I’m being too pessimistic…

Certainly a timely article:

The Wellesley situation is very unsettling. My daughter is a Questbridge finalist, and Wellesley is her first choice.If they select her, the decision is binding. She will know on Monday. I wish this news story had surfaced before now, as it may have changed her mind about whether or not she was willing to be bound to them.Hillel is highly important to her. She and her twin sister are founding members and officers in a new BBYO chapter, which has greatly increased their desire to be highly involved in a Hillel chapter.

Good luck with the outcome. Has she tried reaching out to any current students who are Hillel officers to get their take on the situation?

Ema, I loved my time at Wellesley, and I suspect your DD will too. Let her bring her voice and values to this campus

I know this was discussed a little a couple years ago, (from looking at old posts), but does anyone have any current information as how active jewish life/hillel is at University of Tampa? I believe they “share” a hillel with USF but am wondering if they have a substantial amount of their own programming. Also, does anyone have a guess as to the percentage of jewish students at Uof Tampa?

I would check out the FB page for the university Hillel, and also their instagram and twitter to get a better idea.

Also Chabad:

http://chabadut.org/

I found an article from 2011 stating the university was about 5% Jewish, which would be about 250 students. Not sure if that has changed since.

I’m puzzled by the Wellesley decision, too. I’m going to look into it more. Anyway, I’m glad to see this thread revived.

More re Wellesley: <a href=“Wellesley College can’t tiptoe around anti-Semitism - The Boston Globe”>Wellesley College can’t tiptoe around anti-Semitism - The Boston Globe;

Thanks for posting this article. Reading it just gave me the chills. Personally, I wouldn’t want to attend a college where the administration thought it was appropriate to speak like this about anyone. I realize it was years ago, but the current climate on some campuses is distressing.

There is an interesting article in the San Diego Jewish World about a student at SDSU interviewing Jewish students about the anti- Israel sentiments on campus. This student eventually changed his views. I don’t want to post the link- or discuss it- as I think it is beyond the scope of the CC board, but it illustrates how Jewish students are feeling marginalized on some campuses.

does anyone know about jewish life at Butler University??

Here’s some info on Butler. As always, I recommend looking at their fb and twitter to connect with current students for the best info.

Their fb page shows a number of scheduled events this fall, including a Hanukah party with Ball State, speakers, Shabbat services, a bagel brunch, etc.

any thoughts on the undergrad business schools at Miami University or Butler University?

If you are asking about Miami University in Ohio, my son and I were both very impressed with the Farmer School. He wound up choosing UMD/Smith School, but Miami was a close second. He liked it more than IU/Kelley.

@turtleneck7:
My son looked at Kelley Bloomington, Butler and Kelley Indianapolis. All in a whirlwind flurry of visits. He chose Indianapolis because of first year housing options, maturity of the students and initial entry into the Honors program.

I was encouraging Bloomington because I went there, but he felt out of place. But it does have a beautiful campus and traditional college feel. It is a better Business School than the ones you asked about.

We looked at Butler, pretty good Business School. Affluent and bucolic. You might really like it.

Don’t know about Miami.

Check them all out in person.

Any thoughts on the Syracuse University Whitman Finance undergraduate program? Dual program with Newhouse?

If you are thinking of business schools you might want to check out UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management. Excellent credentials and pretty nice for the average Jewish B student (although to get into ISOM you need much higher than a B). My son is on a birthright trip right now through the Hillel there and they also have a Chabad House. Both facilities are right on campus.
