Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

PS: I think we all agreed that Elon became much more active Jewishly after our cousin decided to transfer. I’m sure there were many reasons for her transfer, there usually are.

re: out of state scholarships at Miami University (in OH) - you can go to their website and look at the merit assistance chart - ACT score & grades to determine the range of merit aid you will receive. We have found them to be generous with scholarship $$. My understanding is the Jewish life at Miami of OH is thriving and there is plenty of comfort for Jewish kids on campus.
We are still waiting to hear from UMiami (FL) …that was a late application from my son - he applied once the temperatures in the midwest dipped below freezing! We don’t know that much about Jewish life on campus but I have seen a lot of buzz about it on this thread so we took it on faith that he would be comfortable there (both Jewishly and with his love of wearing shorts all year).

^^tootired: Tons of Jewish kids at UMiami, FL. My nephew just graduated there in May. Loved it!

For those following the boys3x situation - we have more good news. She is tentatively being released from the rehab facility mid-February. She still needs tremendous assistance with even basic tasks - so it remains to be seen if she is coming straight home with an aide or going to another facility for an additional few weeks. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts.

Thanks for the update. Hope things continue to progress for her.

Great news - I will keep her in my thoughts!! (i have been following, just not posting)

Hope all is well with everyone here. Hard to believe S2 (for which I started following this group) is a second semester junior. Time flies. I am so glad to see that this thread continues to thrive. I always found this group supportive and greatly informative - it has helped so many people, Jewish and non-Jewish (like me) alike!

dwhite - I think time has gone by even more quickly for me with my S2 than with S1. A college senior next year? Not possible. He has done well and I have really retired the helicopter. He is busy looking for a summer internship in his major and recently asked me if I wanted to see a copy of his spreadsheet where he is tracking his applications and responses - and I replied that I was sure he was on top of it and he did not need to send to me! Progress.

@rockvillemom - I am duly impressed! I am not so sure I would have been so strong…I think my helicopter is still idling. Sounds like your guy is doing awesome - job well done.

I am happy to report that my guy is also well. Unfortunately, he did have a health issue late last semester which somewhat derailed him. He is doing better and we think (hope) we are on the right track. I think the whole thing has been harder on me. :((

Does anyone here have any knowledge of the “Green SAT system”? it’s and online course, and I’m thinking something like this might be better for my 2nd son who is not totally on board with taking any course at all? Oh, and S1 is still loving Colorado College and did beautifully his first semester, what a feeling!

My daughter did the “Green SAT system” and her scores increased 100 and 80 points CR/Math. It was the first program she tried that she didn’t mind doing. I’m now a fan.

Thanks Garamond, good to hear!

@tootired‌ Putting in another good word for Jewish life at the University of Miami (FL). My DS is a second semester soph (can’t believe how fast it goes). He goes to Hillel for Shabbat whenever he can. Lots of Israel programs. He meets Jewish students all over campus. My friend’s DD (a Frost freshman there) is now starting a Jewish a cappella group. It’s a very diverse campus and I love that my DS has a lot of Jewish friends and friends from all over the U.S. and all over the world. And now he’s interested in applying for an internship in Israel for the summer (fingers crossed).

Thanks Linymom. Good to hear about u Miami. Hope to hear soon! Nice scholarships from Ohio schools are making them very appealing but snow storm in the Midwest is making Florida a hopeful option!
For those who keep track, my son received merit scholarships from Miami of Ohio & the Ohio State (national buckeye & trustee scholarships) - he is truly a B student - 3.45 gpa & 30 (31 if super score) on act

@dwhite and @rockvillemom, I feel the same way. ShawD who is probably the one I joined this forward for, had graduated in December after 3.5 years which included a transfer after the first semester. She is now a grad student getting her masters degree to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

And thanks for the update on boysx3.

Any thoughts on the undergraduate business programs at Syracuse or Miami University?

If you are talking about Miami of Ohio, Farmer is a good business school that seems to be rising in prestige. They have a very impressive facility. Syracuse is not that highly rated. Not sure top firms recruit there like some other schools…

Some interesting new Birthright trips for summer 2015:

For those of you interested in a boys3x update - she is finally coming home at the end of February, after being hospitalized since her traumatic brain hemorrhage on September 5th. However, she is far from fully recovered - as she has substantial issues with short term memory and needs help with all basic tasks - dressing, eating, showering, etc. She will require full-time aides at home. Hoping that as she moves home and continues to receive therapy, she will continue to improve.

Any thoughts on the undergraduate business programs at Syracuse, Miami University (Ohio) and the University of Miami?

Anyone??
