Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

No knowledge, turtkeneck7. I know a fair bit about high end MBA programs. I’m a big believer in learning how to think as an undergrad, however you do it. E.g., Take the econ courses with math and not the econ appreciation courses. Same with stats – learn some and not just stats for marketing. Maybe learn about how to code. Then getting a job won’t be a problem.

My son and I were both very impressed with the Farmer School and Miami Ohio overall. He liked it more than IU/the Kelley School. Neither of us expected to like it as much as we did. He wound up at UMD/Smith School, but Miami was a close second. Go visit if you can.

Rockville, thanks for posting update on Boysx3. Please let her know many of us are thinking of her and wishing her a full recovery.

Absolutely. Hoping to visit her once she is settled in at home.

Any thoughts on the Syracuse University Whitman/Newhouse Dual program?

I thought this was an interesting and disturbing article about a student being told she might not be qualified to serve in a student government position at UCLA because she was Jewish.

Wow. Surprised and saddened by this story.

@Mom24boys, thank you for posting that link. That’s very upsetting and some of the comments are even more alarming than the story itself.

This is disturbing. Thankfully there was enough good sense and influence in the room that prevented this student from being blocked. I really wanted to view some of this on YouTube but couldn’t find the section with this discussion. We can hope that some changes of perspectives occurred in the minds of those with initial concerns and that further apologies will be forthcoming. It is sad that this happened but good that maybe some growth and change happened during the discussion. I can hope anyway. It is important for our students to know these prejudices exist even in the most liberal regions of the country (possibly moreso in more liberal regions). It sounded like this woman could be a model for our kids by defending her qualifications with dignity. I will be sharing the link with my kids. Thanks Mom24boys!

Hello everyone. It has been quite awhile since I’ve posted (my youngest is a college sophomore), but I have a strange request and wonder if any of you might be able to help.

My son hasn’t been very happy with his college choice, and he’s decided to transfer. He’s applied to six entrepreneurship programs (Bradley, Syracuse, Drexel, Northeastern, U Conn, and USC). Fortunately, he’s done well at his current college, and he’s already gotten acceptances from three of the six schools to which he’s applied (he’s not yet heard from the other three).

We’re trying to determine how to fit in college visits before the May 1 reply date, but his schedule is such that it’s going to be tough. He mentioned that what he’d really appreciate is being able to speak with students at each of the schools he’s considering who are unhappy with their choice. He pointed out that most of the things he’s found frustrating at his current college are things that he’d not have heard about on a visit to campus, so he feels he could make a better decision by speaking with students who aren’t “rah rah” about their school to see if he would find their complaints to be deal breakers or to be things that he’d find easy to deal with.

So…do any of you know students who attended Bradley, Syracuse, Drexel, Northeastern, U Conn, or USC who had some misgivings or, perhaps, even transferred away? And, if so, would they be willing to speak with a prospective transfer student to give him “the real scoop?”

Thanks in advance for considering this unusual request.

Incidentally, if any of you could comment about those things that worry us moms (campus safety, career services, quality of program) at those six schools, I’d appreciate it. I know that a number of them aren’t in the best neighborhoods, and I would like to know how risky they are for students.

You might want to copy and paste your request onto each college forum as well - as that may generate some responses. But keep in mind how much opinions will vary and students - even transfer students - will have different experiences. What about contacting faculty for the entrepreneurship program at each school and seeing if they could provide student contact(s) in the program.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll definitely try to place my request on each college’s forum as well. He plans to contact the entrepreneurship program faculty at each school to speak with them, but he’s concerned that the students they would typically have speak with prospective students are those who would only have good things to say.

Completely understand. But sometimes a student has a bad experience with a roommate, as an example, and that negatively colors every aspect of their experience. So they may have lots of negative comments stemming from that perspective that might not be applicable to other students.

I will add that when we visited colleges, we always asked tour guides and other students what they did not like or what they wished they could change at that college and did receive some interesting responses.

this great forum seems to be losing it’s mojo…I miss the spirit.

Well, it ebbs and flows.

The UCLA debacle is gaining national media attention:

Amid the rise in anti-Semitism at our college campuses, a thoughtful piece from the Washington Post:

And on a very positive note, boysx3 is at home, after being hospitalized since September 6th. She has a long road ahead, but amazing progress all the same.

Just found out my son will be on the May 10 Birthright trip.

Congratulations! My son had such a fabulous time last year.

Oh what great news about boysx3, RVM. It’s been exactly 5 years since my mother’s massive stroke and she will never recover. Her ‘mind’ is there, but she can no longer speak, walk or use her arms. She’s trapped in her body and permanently in a nursing home. Wonderful that boysx3 is actually able to be home. Hope her recovery continues.

My older S is graduating in May, unbelievable, really. And my younger S is finishing up his first college year and is loving it. He will be going on Birthright too, at the end of May. Really great opportunities for these kids to see Israel with other kids their same ages. My older one went on Birthright in his sophomore year and then spent that summer doing a two month unpaid internship in the middle of Jerusalem. 100% paid for by the program. Talk about great opportunities!

I just read an article where anti-semetism is much more prevalent on campuses than anyone realizes. That is soooo sad. A lot of it stems from ignorance, imo. And the way kids are taught from an early age. It’s just wrong and sad and frightening.
