@proudmama3 thank you for the info on URI. I see that your DS is attending UT in the fall. What drew him to that school?
Well, he really wanted to go somewhere warm and they happened to be the least expensive of all the schools he was accepted to, soā¦ Hopefully heāll love it!
How did one of the best all time forums run out of steam? @rockvillemom you are missedā¦
@BigPapiofthree please donāt tell me there is no steam. Child #3 is truly a B student who wants a comfort level for Jewish students. She is a junior and I need this forum now more than ever!
I was also hoping this thread would pick back up! I posted a few weeks back hoping to get it going again, but there was hardly any feedback. My Jewish B student is a junior as well and I found past comments by posters to be immensely helpful but would love some updated info and observations.
Now that we are in it together, we can get it going. We donāt have test scores so I have no idea how that will factor into the mix. Also, my older two are at large state universities (University of IL and the Ohio State University) but my D is most likely looking at midsize schools so I feel that Iām starting from scratch. I will certainly post as we investigate schools -
Mid-size universities are a bit harder because so many are Catholic universities.
My S would like a larger public school because he goes to such a small private school and is ready for more people and more opportunities. But he is a little more reserved and a tad on the shyer side so I think that he would do just as well at a mid sized school (3,000 - 10,000 kids). He has schools from Vermont down to Florida on his list but prefers the warmer weather he would get south of VA where we live.
While he has about 15 schools on his āmaybe, we will seeā list, the one school on the definite list is the U of South Carolina. Comparing SC schools, I would also like him to look at Furman (on the smaller side) and Wofford (on the really small side), but I am not sure if either place would be the right fit for a Jewish boy, even a reformed one.
@VaNcBorder - a lot of people on this thread really like Elon University. It is mid-sized but there was some discussion if it is now a B+/A- school. You may want to check it out.
@VaNcBorder, College of Charleston might be worth checking out too. It has a Hillel chapter and is home to the Jewish Heritage Collection, which focuses on the history of Jewish life in the South. Like Elon, it seems to be a āhotā school up here in the northeast.

Charleston is a fabulous city and home to one of the oldest congregations in the country, Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, which has great significance in the history of Reform Judaism: http://www.kkbe.org/.
Nothing to say, except I am so happy to see this thread lively again!
@tootiredtocare Elon has a great reputation and several things on my sonās with list, but around here, it has turned into an āAā school. Over the past couple of years, kids have been wait listed or denied admission while gaining admission to several other competitive schools. However, an Elon rep will be visiting his school next month and I have told my son it wouldnāt hurt to go meet them.
@LucieTheLakie CofC is on his list of schools. When we do our NC/SC college road trip in March we will be heading there. A rep from that school will also be visiting next month and my son already has it on his calendar. Thatās why I was looking for feedback on Furman and/or Wofford. While we are close, I wanted to know if they are schools worth a visit or if they need to be crossed off now.
Elon is a good one (reach for a B/B+ student). CNU and Towson, too (low matches). CoC is a great match.
Furman and Wofford are conservative/Christian in student body and general vibe, I wouldnāt recommend them to a Jewish student even if theyāre excellent academically.
@MYOS1634 CNU is about 45 minutes away from my house (and down the street from my in-laws) so the school is not on my sonās list. I just had a friend visit Towson with her daughter and will be speaking with her soon to hear about her visit.
As far as Furman, I did see on their website that they do have a Hillel, but I imagine it is a very small group of students. My son may not join, but as a mother, I just want him to have a group of Jewish students that he can connect with and feel comfortable around. Here is an older article that talked about the school hiring a rabbi. Since it is from 2012, I am not sure if her concept ever took off.

I looked at Wofford and thereās no Jewish life to speak of. My youngest said she doesnāt care so itās still on her list, but I am very uncomfortable with it.
You might want to look at Emory- Oxford College. The Oxford College campus has a Jewish Student Union and Emory main campus has a Hillel, a Chabad and a very significant Jewish population. Oxford is a little easier admit than Emory main but beginning Junior year, you are able to finish your degree at the main campus.
Just FYI CofC also now has a Kosher/ Vegan dining hall.
Does anybody have any thoughts on UNC-Wilmington? The size, location and majors sound great but I have not seen much written about it when going back through this thread.
@LBad96 can you weigh in on UNC Wilmington?
I think cofcās kosher dining hall has been there for a year or 2, @carolinamom2boys
