Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

@jym626 yes. It’s the newest dining hall that’s been open for about a year .

@VaNcBorder @carolinamom2boys UNCW is a very excellent choice indeed for the reasons already stated. More importantly, though the Jewish population is small, we have a campus Hillel for your Jewish student to fit right in. UNCW is a very accepting and open campus.

LBad96 thank you for the input. I found a great website that highlighted the Hillel’s at all NC colleges that had one on campus.

http://northcarolina.hillel.org/home/our-campuses

Once you click on a college to the right, you can click the What We Do tab at the top and it will tell you an approximate amount of how many Jewish undergraduates are on campus. I saw that Wilmington has about 150 Jewish students. The only college that redirects you to its own website is Elon, I am assuming because there Hillel is much larger than the other colleges listed.

I am ok with 150. It is better than the 3 I had at my college in Northern Florida. My mom still says that was her one regret over my college experience- not sending me to a school with more Jewish kids. As a teen, it did not phase me, but now, as a parent, I understand and am trying to make this an element of interest for my son.

In researching colleges with an AE Pi, I came across this information on the College of Charleston website. Does anybody know the reason behind this since the college seems to have such a Jewish presence.

*On Tuesday, August 30, 2016, Alpha Epsilon Pi International suspended operation and revoked recognition of its Chi Omicron chapter at the College of Charleston. The College of Charleston is in support of Alpha Epsilon Pi International Fraternity’s action and does not recognize the existence of the Chi Omicron chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi at the College. The College of Charleston Interfraternity Council and Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will be working with Alpha Epsilon Pi International Fraternity to determine when Alpha Epsilon Pi International Fraternity would be able to recolonize at the College of Charleston. Standard recolonization is a minimum of five years from the revocation of the charter.

@VaNcBorder google the story from September. It wouldn’t seem that fraternity is coming back for a long time.

Well that article certainly answered my question! I always end up hearing terrible stories about fraternities that really make me nervous about my son participating. I know all frats are not bad, but you end up hearing so many things about the ones that are.

A friend who has a son in AE Pi at another college told me that one of the schools biggest drug dealers is in his frat so drugs (of every kind) are plentiful at every party.

Maybe my son can just find a nice jewish sorority girl to date and can get into all of the social events that way. That is how it has worked out for my daughter and her boyfriend at her school.

If only. Non-frat boys are not invited to frat parties precisely because it reduces their chances with the sorority girls. Of course, non-sorority girls are welcome at frat parties. Sorority houses don’t have parties.

My daughter’s sorority has a ‘brother’ fraternity so she is invited to all of their parties and her boyfriend goes with her. And he gets to go to all of her sorority formals.

I am just hoping that my son finds a school that has a great group of kids for him to connect with whether through a fraternity, through Hillel or any combination of clubs and organizations. Just putting together a list of potential schools has been stressful enough. And I know its just the beginning of the process.

CofC has a strong Jewish student organization on campus. CofC has suspended all alcohol at fraternity activities currently . They have a lot of clubs on campus that are not fraternities.

High Point University might be worth a look. Beautiful campus. Easier than Elon. Not sure how many Jews. Not far from Elon either. Elon, while now harder to get in, is easier if you apply ED…Just saying. CofC is a really cool place. Great city, near the water, lots of jewish kids. Good For B student. The Frat was suspended for rape of a minor. There was video of incident. Horrible…

The frat in question had already been forced off of campus before the incident. CofC is taking a hard stance on drinking and sexual assault, more so than many other schools.

My son will be meeting with the Elon admissions rep at his school on Tuesday (good thing we only go to temple the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah). What can he expect from the meeting and any advice on things to discuss?

Of all of the schools coming, he is interested in meeting with 4 of them- University of South Carolina was cancelled because of flooding in our area, Elon next week, and JMU and College of Charleston at the end of October. It will be the first tangible connections made with schools beyond requesting information from the websites.

I posted this long ago on this thread, but many kids from our shul go to Towson and really like it. It has a vibrant Jewish life. UMD has a sizable Jewish population, but that my be larger than what you’re looking for, and it is a tougher admit than in previous years.

@BigPapiofthree if you want a respected university, look elsewhere than High Point…generally regarded as very weak academically and it has a reputation for pampering instead of challenging its students. You could pay me $1 million a year and I still wouldn’t go.

High Point has the reputation of being a “country club school”, where material comfort is more important to the students and their parents than intellectual skills or learning in general. It may not seem fair to kids there who feel they do work hard, but all in all the school caters to upper middle class to wealthy kids who didn’t do too well but still did okay, can’t get into Chapel Hill or NCSU but don’t want to be at a directional public university, want to be with peers and continue enjoying the things they took for granted at home, while getting a degree because it’s expected of them. So, unless you fall into that specific demographic, I wouldn’t really recommend it. There’s clearly a market for it and what they do, they do well. They’ve been trying in the past couple years to focus back on academics because their reputation is hurting them (in NC it’s well-known for the above) but it’s still not their brand.

Need recommendations for small Florida schools public or private for my son who has a b average. Taking ACT tomorrow so don’t have that yet. Does community service, in a club, plays baseball and golf. We are looking to move to Florida from NY when he graduates and would like to have him look at options there. Thanks!

Florida Gulf Coast- in Ft Myers. Beautiful campus! We went for a visit when visiting family when DS was in 10th grade. Seemed to have lots to offer.

FGCU Is not a small school - has around 15,000 students.

A couple more:

New College of Florida in Sarasota is a small public college, probably more of a B+ to A choice.

University of Tampa is private, medium sized (about 8,000) and is a good B choice.
