So I just wanted to know a list of colleges that are in relatively suburban areas. I am from Dallas, and I love how SMU is in Highland Park. But I was wondering are there any other colleges in relatively suburban areas like that? I know University of Richmond is in a nice area that’s close to the city (but still in a posh, quiet area). Are there any decent colleges in areas like that? Like the closest I could think of besides SMU and UoR would be maybe some colleges off the Main Line in Philadelphia or something in Westchester. Thanks in advance.
St. Mary’s in Moraga, California immediately popped into my head.
Boston College, Wake Forest, Villanova, and I’m sure many others.
Northwestern
depending on your definition of suburban, Tufts might fit the bill. Vassar? Certainly Swarthmore.
There are tons of colleges in suburban areass – these schools will cover a huge range in terms of size, geographic location, competitiveness etc. I suggest you start by getting your hands on some good college guide books (ex. Fiske, Princeton Review) and start reading. The books can probably be found in the guidance office or library.
Such a broad subject, what kind of major, size of college do you want? What’s achievable grades-wise? What’s “suburban”? Boston has a few - BC, Tufts, Brandeis probably all fit your description. Emory in Atlanta. American in DC. Hofstra, Stony Brook on Long Island.
Princeton
Philly suburbs has a bunch - Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, Villanova, Ursinus, and more small, lesser known colleges.
I thought Furman in Greenville was suburban.
Wellesley, Lewis and Clark, Stanford, Princeton.
These couldn’t be more different from each other. Really depends on what you’re looking for in so many respects. Do you mean “leafy”? Near a big city but not downtown?
St. Joes in philly
Macalester. It isn’t a suburb exactly, but it is in a fairly quiet neighborhood, bordered by a stately boulevard lined with large, old houses that runs from the Mississippi River all the way to the state capitol in downtown St Paul a few miles away.
Miami - University of Miami (Coral Gables)
Orlando - Rollins College (Winter Park)
Atlanta - in addition to Emory, Agnes Scott (Decatur)
Charlotte - Davidson College (Davidson/ Lake Norman area)
Richmond - University of Richmond
Chicago - Northwestern (Evanston); Lake Forest College
Columbus - Denison University (Granville)
San Diego - UCSD (La Jolla)
Los Angeles- Claremont Colleges: Pomona, Scripps et al.
Denver - University of Denver
New York - a few in NJ - Drew Univ.; Stevens; Rutgers New Brunswick; in CT - Fairfield
Tulane is in the beautiful and historic Uptown area of New Orleans right across the street from Audubon Park, about 20 minutes from downtown.
