Beyond Columbia and NYU, look at Fordham (the Bronx) and Drew (not hard to get to NYC)

Also, look at Manhattan College in Riverdale.

Fairfield University in Fairfield CT ... Fairfield is on the New Haven line of MetroNorth so easy to get to NYC

Marist, many schools in CT (U Conn, Trinity, etc.), Rutgers

Sarah Lawrence (Bronxville), Vassar (also in Poughkeepsie as is Marist),

Look into Iona College and Pace University(Westchester), Hofstra (Long Island), Mount St.Mary's (Newburgh).

Some SUNY's: Stony Brook, New Paltz

Barnard College! It's an all-women's college, right in NYC. If you go to Barnard, you can take classes at Columbia too.

Fordham, SUNY stony brook, Iona, Hofstra, SUNY Binghamton(a little farthur north than 70 miles)

I second (actually thrid i think) Fordham. Barnard's great too. For religious schools there's St. Johns thats Catholic....

Rutgers...

Just about anywhere in NJ will put you...maximum just over an hour into NYC, easy train ride on NJ Transit (and we've got double decker trains now! it's the little things...)
