As of right now, I am fairly confident that I would like to pursue a career in International Business and learn one or two languages in college. However, I have heard varying responses on which colleges are well-known for their program in International Business. Does anyone know good colleges for that particular major or have had a good experience with their program?
@uofmichigan :
What are your stats?
What state are you a resident of? (Michigan)??)
What’s your parents ’ budget?

An alternative would be to enroll in a liberal arts program with a major in area studies, international relations, or a foreign language/literature, then get an MBA later. Or get an undergraduate business degree (not necessarily with an international focus) and minor in a language. Do a semester/year abroad. Aim for at least one good internship experience with a focus on international business (or policy issues, if they interest you). Various colleges have strengths in one or more of these areas (Tufts for example in IR, Middlebury in several foreign languages).
It’s hard to recommend appropriate colleges without answers to MYOS1634’s questions.
Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service offers a major in Global Business (http://sfs.georgetown.edu/gbus/). It also offers good need-based aid, but is very selective. UDenver is less selective; it offers an international business major, in addition to well-regarded IR programs.
University of South Carolina
Brandeis U. established an International Business School a number of years ago–I can’t vouch for its “greatness”, but they seem to be putting a lot of resources into this endeavor, so I think it’s worth exploring: https://www.brandeis.edu/global/
American U’s Kogod School of Business, which is highly regarded, has an International Business department, and I imagine the resources (courses, visiting lecturers, etc.) of the university’s School of International Service, which is very prestigious, would be available for a student of international business.
UPenn has outstanding offerings in international business. Between Wharton and the IR Department/Area studies departments in the College, Penn offers a ton of courses and has devoted many resources to bridging the disciplinary divide between IR/Area Studies and Business in a way that can give any student in Penn’s 4 undergrad schools (College, Wharton, Engineering, Nursing) the education they’ll need to thrive in an international business environment.
Penn also offers the Huntsman program in International Relations and Business which you might find is more specifically attuned to your interests: http://huntsman.upenn.edu/ – Otherwise, the standard curriculum in the College and in Wharton should provide you with what you’re looking for and you can use resources from either school to supplement what you’re learning and channel your education into the directions you believe will be best.
Finally, there are a LOT of centers on campus devoted to studying business both globally and with specific regions of the world in mind. Be sure to check them out for more specific information about how you can integrate their research and resources into your education.
If you have any specific questions about Penn, I’m happy to answer them. Definitely give Penn a close look as you go through this process
Also check out Northeastern as you can major in business and do 2 or 3 international coops to get relevant experience.
Dickinson has an international business major. Gives good merit aid, too.
Here are the answers to the questions that were asked by MYOS1634
My stats are decent. I’m not sure on exact GPA but it’s over 3.5, and by the end of junior year, I will have 8 AP classes and 9 honors classes recorded. I have been involved with Model UN and Beta every single year in high school to date.
I am actually a resident of Georgia. I just happen to want to go to U of M as it was my state of residence for 7 years
Overall, my parents have a generous budget, and they are willing to pay for college if I go to a 4-year college
