<p>collegehelp, this is VERY, VERY USEFUL! I suggest you also post it in the Transfer students forum, so that students looking to transfer can get a more realistic idea of their chances of acceptance..</p>
<p>I don't think this is that useful. Basically, the colleges at the bottom are those where it's more likely students will have to drop out for financial reasons, or where perhaps marginal students were accepted because the acceptance rates are so high. It doesn't say anything about the quality of the teachers or education (unless you measure that quality by quality of the student body). Now, if you first grouped them by SAT scores and then by retention rates WITHIN those categories, that might be useful. Unfortunately, what you probably find is that they are all within a % or two of each other so it's somewhat meaningless.</p>

<p>First of all, what is the purpose of this information?</p>
<p>Secondly, one can't put a whole lot of stock in it for the following reasons:</p>
<p>Let's say a hospital "A" admits only patients in perfect health (parallel: Ivies admitting only the top academic students). Yet another hospital "B" takes many of the riskiest cases (parallel: state schools, community colleges, less competitive private colleges) that no other hospitals would be willing to take.</p>
<p>When the state report (parallel: USNWR and the info presented in this thread) comes out, hospital "A" is at the top of the list because of it's next-to-zero mortality rate. At the same time, hospital "B" is at the bottom of the list because of its high mortality rate. The public takes the state report info at face value and concludes that hospital "A" is clearly superior to hospital "B". Yet, they don't consider that hospital "B" was willing to take a chance on the patients at greatest risk, while hospital "A" avoided all risky patients.</p>
<p>Of course the Ivies will have a higher retention rate. They admit only the "healthiest" academic students and stay clear of everyone else.</p>
<p>Hats off to the colleges out there that are admitting a wider range of students. Let's not use info like that on this post to draw the conclusion that Harvard is better than "State U."!</p>
<p>Nice analogy Old and Wise... You really are old and wise I guess... Well maybe not old (because that is not really a compliment I think.. lol)... but certainly wise.</p>
<p>You don't have to put a lot of stock in the info to find it useful --- it's useful as a starting point for forming specific questions and getting more answers from the college, on a tour or through emails. Are students leaving because of weeder courses, or financial woes, or dissatisfaction with the teaching/ professors or there's too much partying....at least one knows to ask the question. For example, I didn't know that Cal-Poly SLO had a relatively high attrition rate and now I might want to look into the reason for that.....so thanks, collegehelp.</p>

<p>I guess it can be of some use, but I would be very careful to make assumptions about the quality of the school based on attrition rates since there are so many variables involved in why students choose to leave.</p>
<p>It can be something as simple as this: Students who have the financial resources to attend virtually any school they wish might be more likely not to leave that school after enrolling, provided that they did a good job of researching the school prior to enrolling. Due to having the financial resources, they did not have to "settle" on a different school because of cost issues. </p>
<p>On the other hand, students with limited resources, especially those whose parents make too much to get a lot of financial aid but not enough to send them to a high-cost college, might end up "settling" for a particular college because of financial reasons. Those students might stay at that college for a year or two, and then leave. In my 30-year career, I saw that happen MANY, MANY times!!!</p>
<p>Also, it is likely that (generally speaking) students at Ivy-type colleges had better assistance going through the college selection process than students at other types of colleges because of access to better college advisors (wealthier high schools, boarding schools, etc.) and having more highly educated parents at home to assist them in the process of selecting a college. Consequently, students at less prestigious colleges may find after a year or two that their college choice was inappropriate, and transfer to another college.</p>
<p>Again, it's important not to draw conclusions about college quality from attrition rates.</p>
<p>supern3rd: I'm old........mighty old!!!!!! So don't feel funny about calling me old! With old age comes the ability to tap into one's life experiences and look at things from a much different perspective than a younger person.</p>

<p>old- good point on you part re reasons for transfering[or not] I hope that students, especially those on the Transfer forum, would take a look at this info, so they aren't kidding themselves about their "chances" of trying to transfer "up" to a more "prestigeous college, which is very, very tough nowadays. I get the impression that many students thinking about transfering don't seem to realize that for most colleges, someone has to leave in order for an opening to occur, and for many reasons, not too many students leave the top caliber colleges once they are there.</p>
<p>menlo: You're absolutely correct. Transferring into an elite is college is extremely difficult. Students should not enter college with the plan of transferring out to a highly competitive school.</p>
<p>VERY IMPORTANT: STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER ENTER A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE IN A MINDSET OF TRANSFERRING OUT AFTER A YEAR OR TWO. That kind of mindset causes a student to not get "connected" with their college in their freshman year, which can result in disasterous consequences.</p>
<p>Feeling "connected" with a college is the single most important task of every college freshman. Failure to connect, socially and academically, is the worst thing a freshman can do.</p>
