I'm finding that many colleges that seem like they would otherwise be great options, are getting crossed off of our lists because of a lack of transportation. If the college would require a flight or train (Amtrak) ride, and it is not actually near the airport or train station...many are an hour or more away from the airport....how are students planning to make that trip regularly?
I am finding several in Pennsylvania and Virginia and DC that look interesting, but logistics keep them off the list. Bryn Mawr and consortium is still on the list since the commuter rail runs that direction, but others; Muhlenberg, Lafayette, Washington and Lee, William and Mary, etc.....I just don't see how to make it work.

Are there some in those general areas that may offer transportation that isn't mentioned on their website?

Most students at these schools will need transportation at breaks. The above link shows how W & M does it.

Pitt and CMU in Pittsburgh are a good distance from the airport but the city has a wonderful regular bus that is just about door to door.

Transportation is a good thing to check out ahead of time. If you don’t see a solution, call and ask how the current students get to the airport.

Definitely ask each college. When my older son attended Oberlin, the school would arrange a shuttle that went to the airport in Cleveland. For other times of the year every student was aware of a woman in town who ran an informal taxi service to the airport and train station. It wasn’ t on the schools website but son used it many times. Out of necessity, I’m sure every school has some mechanism in place to get their students to/from the airport - it’s just that some may be more of a pita than others.

Many colleges have shuttles to airports during vacation breaks. I agree, you need to contact each school. And depending on where you live, there are some alternate ways to get back and forth. As an example, my D happens to be at Lafayette now and there is a private bus service that goes directly from campus and makes stops in Westchester, CT, Boston and I think another bus goes to the DC area – this services other schools as well including I believe Muhlenberg.

Thank you @Denisec for that link. I was on their site and didn’t find that!

@need2learn, I guess I will need to ask them…it just seems odd that they might have that service and not let people know. I’d think they’d realize that would be a part of the college selection process.

It isn’t obvious from the websites (not sure why…), but a lot of colleges DO have shuttles to and from the airports. I agree that they sure could communicate this better. Also, we use SuperShuttle sometimes – it adds some travel time, but has worked pretty well for D2.

Thank you all again…seeing that link, and reading that colleges do, indeed often have shuttle services, got me searching school sites again, and going about the search a little differently…and I am finding more information. I think I was approaching the search more as a visitor before.
