Colleges that will give students with professional parents financial aid or money?

My mom and dad is a lawyer and doctor, respectively. Is there really any hope of getting any aid or money from colleges that I apply?

You won’t qualify for need-based aid, but if your stats are high enough, you could get merit aid.

What are your stats?

how much will your parents pay for college?

Looking at your past posts, it appears that you are going to be premed and you live in Calif. What is the deal? You have UCs that you can attend, likely at full freight, but around $30k.

Are your parents balking at that (cost or UC)?

Your parents went to a Catholic univ…are they wanting you do the same? or at least a private? Are you Vietnamese?

What are your stats?

What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay? If they are successful in their fields, then their incomes are likely $300k+…way too much for any aid at any school…even HYP

4.00 UW
34 ACT Composite

Tbh, I talked to my parents last night, and I think I’m most likely gonna attend a UC. Also, do LACs emphasize a lot on writing? I’m more of a math and science type of guy.

What do your parents make? Some lawyers and doctors make ten times more than others.

We’re financially stable, it’s just going to be challenging later in the future. I’m not comfortable disclosing any information about my parents.

Go to the net price calculators on college web sites to get financial aid estimates. No one here can even guess at what financial aid you might get.

We don’t need detailed info. Your first post suggests that your doctor and lawyer parents’ income is too high for aid. Fine. Got it. The above posts suggests that something in the future may jeopardize finances. OK. If so, and your parents are fine with paying $30k per year for a UC, then you’re set. If they want to pay less than that then apply where your stats would get huge merit.

Would applying out of CA increase my chances of getting merit aid? Like the Un. of Rochester?

No. Merit aid is based on your stats. Go to the Financial Aid forum and look at the pinned threads for some merit aid options.

What are you asking?

Your first post was about NEED-based aid, which you won’t qualify for.

We’ve told you that your stats will get you MERIT-based aid at some schools…and those schools are in CALIF and OOS. For instance, Santa Clara, in CALIF, would give you merit.

Yes, URoch might give you some merit. I think you would get about $15k per year…maybe.

There are other schools that would give you more merit, if that’s what you want.

Tell us what is going on. Is your goal to go OOS? Is that the big deal?

@jelly765: Its admirable that you are concerned by college costs, but if your parents are willing to pay for a UC, you should take them up on their offer. You will get an excellent education with no debt for undergrad (which is what you want if you plan to attend Medical School).
The UC’s give merit aid in the form of regents scholarships, which can range from $2500-10,000 depending on the UC, but you need very high stats to qualify. You also can take out a $5500 loan as a freshman to help offset costs.

My husband and I make over $150K and I have two sons in California schools. One at a UC and one at a Cal State.
We are full pay and were only offerred the Parent plus loans and my sons were offerred the $5500 loan for financial aid.
I have 529 plans for both boys, so I am able to pay the $50K tuition/room/board each year but they have gotten on-campus jobs to help pay for personal expenses and have the option to work in the summer.

Like many of the above posters have stated, private schools will offer more merit aid, so you need to explore these options. If you post your Stats, you can get some very helpul advice on which schools will give you the best merit aid.

Good Luck.
