lololol. So true, I still don’t understand why Rutgers is even ranked by USNWR. Maybe for pharmacy, but really that’s it.

USC, for surrre.

Although it has always had an excellent reputation in Texas and in academic circles, Rice University’s national reputation is on the rise. Here is some food for thought (keep in mind that rankings are not everything):

Very few top schools can boast excellence in all these aspects of a college education- academics, quality of teaching, quality of life, happiness, diversity, and financial value.

Other colleges whose reputations seem to be growing are: Emory, Vanderbilt, Clemson, USC, Tulane, Ohio State, and University of Cincinnati. Be sure to check out this link on USNWR’s “Up and Coming” colleges: [Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-ut-rank)

In response to modestmelody’s suggestion that we use PA scores to judge changes, I think that is probably a waste of time. They don’t change. While academia is notoriously liberal in its political thought, it is equally conservative in its resistance to the idea that things in the Ivy Tower pecking order could ever change (or at least in a way that drops the level of the historical powers).

For example, I looked at the USNWR Top 50 national universities and their change in PA scores and how they have changed over the past decade. None improved their score by 0.2 points. Four improved by 0.1 (NYU, Georgetown, USC, Wake Forest). Nineteen were scored exactly as they were a decade ago. Twenty-two have seen their score decline by 0.1. Seven have seen declines of 0.2 (U Wisconsin, U Illinois, U Texas, U Washington, Rice, Duke and Tulane).

Now let’s compare this with how student quality, as measured by mid-point of the SAT/ACT 25/75 range, has changed over the past decade (I only have data for the Top 40). I think it’s pretty clear who the big movers have been.

Elon has gained a better reputation

Students choose schools based on reputation as well as a variety of different factors such as location, financial aid, etc…

Location! Very big undergraduate schools located in huge cities such as Boston University, New York University, and the University of Southern California. Each is located in a large, culturally vibrant city. Together with their attractive locations, this allowed them to draw from a larger pool of potential students. **In recent years, they have been able to increase both selectivity and tuition charges/b A fourth private institution, George Washington University is also located in a big city.
