colleges with pretty campuses?

Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Chicago, UVA, Holy Cross…

Never really liked the Harvard campus (as a Boston resident) because of the lack of a “campus feel.” Maybe because of too many tourists pouring out from big buses with their cameras and fanny packs…

Cornell. Not only in the buildings’ architecture, although many of them look like stone castles, but in the windswept mountaintop as well.

While I’m sure that Gothic-themed campuses have their own aspects of beauty, I personally think of southern college campuses as the prettiest. Vanderbilt, UNC Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, Furman University, etc. Weather might affect my decision, though…

Are you male or female? Many women’s colleges have stunning campuses.

Hello,

Don’t know what part of the country you are in, but for those considering Midwestern schools, you should check out St Olaf in Minnesota. Some kind of Goth architecture, but even more noticeable is the overall mix of buildings.

There is a few buildings probably from the 50’s -60’s that are not stunning, but most are in there own way. On out tour, it was pointed out that the vast majority of the buildings use the same local stone whether it was built in the 1890’s or just last year (great new science center). There are many different STYLE of buildings, but a very consistent use of materials through out.

One of the other things I appreciated about the architecture (being in the design field myself) is how there Chapel, Library, and Commons (cafetiere) are all connected (important in Minn. in winter). It serves a a “hub” at the heart of campus.

Beautiful setting too, on a hill just outside of a beautiful little town of 20K people (Carleton is in the same town too, so lots of progressiveness there).

It may not be as striking as some of the older east coast schools or ives, but for a school where an average top notch student has a chance of getting into, it is quite a gem. Many academically outstanding things going on too; Huge number of study abroad, Rhodes Scholars, Med School placements, prestigious internship placements, number of kids getting into top notch grad schools, etc…

In summary, a great, beautiful, high end. realistic school in a beautiful spot.

Rice, Emory, Duke, Stanford, and Yale.

djdietz, completely agree with everything you said about St Olaf, a great school. My D did not care for the campus as much as I did, she is hung up on “red brick buildings”.

As far as beautiful campuses, no list is complete without Furman, Elon or Miami of Ohio. Red brick building heaven.
