Colleges with strong English/Lit and studio art depts

What are some good schools, strong in both English, writing, lit, as well as strong art departments, particulary graphic design and digital media? Dd does not want to go to art school.

Thanks

Have you looked into Kenyon?

Brown, for sure. I have very similar interests. The creative writing and English opportunities there are great. Best of all, you can take advantage of cross-registering in classes at the nearby Rhode Island School of Design - one of the best art schools in the country.

yeah Kenyon is good

Bowling Green is strong in both English and Art.

Early, There are quite a few small liberal arts schools that have excellent English including creative writing and excellent art studio; however, they tend to focus on traditional media, e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking. Their graphic and digital media offerings are, generally speaking, slim. They teach a course or two but you don't find the cutting edge technology as you would at an art school.

Those I would put in this category are Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Vassar, Conn College, Kenyon. Smith, if female. Among the ivy league I would say that Brown and Yale are outstanding for art (and English of course) but again, the emphasis is more traditional. As noted, at Brown you would have access to RISD.

For a good balance of liberal arts plus an art department that offers a wide range of new media, you may have to look at one of the larger universities. University of Michigan comes to mind but I'm sure there are others.

Some Patriot League schools-Holy Cross and Colgate.

Brown is one she is definitely considering, although I'm not sure of how easy or practical it is to work in RISD classes. She hopes to do the RISD summer program next year.

I'm also wondering about the feasibility of Princeton with its new arts endowment -- if they would give her opportunity to explore these avenues as well.

I will look into all the other suggestions. Thanks everyone!

Penn - look into the Kelly Writers' House there. They provide a great atmosphere and a ton of support for English lit.

conn college may not have a graphic design department, but they have an Arts and Technology certificate program where students can design their own majors, including graphic arts and computer animation. the projects that come out of there are very cool!
