Colleges within UofT?

I don't know much at all about the university, so I was hoping if anyone can share any information on the colleges within it. (Mainly Woodsworth, New, University, Victoria & Innis) For example, is there a ranking amongst them? Which would you prefer & why? What is the difference between them?

No real rankings outside of occasional frosh week rivalry. If you're not living in residence, your college has almost no relevance whatsoever. I commute to campus and I'm at New. I went to New for frosh week partying (which was better than the other colleges from the opinions of myself and my friends in UC, Vic, and Innis).

If you're living in residence, then the college you pick determines what residences you can apply to. I don't really know anyone in Woodsworth, but, basically, it's a smaller college and I'm not sure what their residences are like. New Residences are probably some of the nicer ones. The cafeteria food is gross, though. UC res is kinda nice too. Kitchen was a little dirty, though. At Innis, you won't have to share a room with anyone, but there is no meal plan, so you will have to cook. I...um...slept at Vic with people a lot (a coincidence, I swear!), so their residences are most familiar to me. I'd apply for RJ because, I think, you have the option of buying a meal plan to eat at Burwash, though, they did have a mini kitchen in their apartment style residence.

DS is in Vic and is very happy. If you live in res, it definitely does matter what college you are in. DS is in Vic One, a special program for freshmen where you are guaranteed to be in two seminars with only 25 students in them, following a particular study track (look at Vic One on the UofT website). Vic One students are housed together in lower Burwash, considered to be the best housing at Vic. Vic has its own library, just steps away if you like to study in the library. It has a gorgeous campus, including its own theater. All Vic students in res are on the Burwash meal plan, but all dorms have some type of cooking facilities as well.
Innis is almost all engineers, you should know. University has a really nice brand new dorm, but you don't apply for a specific dorm as a freshman, just to a college.

My D is also in Vic and it's not only residence that is determined by what college you are in. Vic has the most scholarship money to award so, if you are a top student, you are likely to get more $$ from Vic than from any other U of T college. You have to have a mealplan at ALL Vic dorms, including RJ (which is where my D is this year) where each apartment has a big kitchen. Vic is a very social, very active, very diverse college that has great extra-curricular activities including a fabulous Drama Society which produces great student theatre. Once you get your acceptance, you can then prioritize your dorms if you want housing (and hopefully you indicated on your original application that you wanted housing!).

There is no real ranking of the different colleges. The two which seem to be the most distinctive, and which kids seem to feel the most strongly about, are Trinity and St. Mike's. Academically, other than the Vic One program, you can take any U of T course regardless of what college you are in.

alwaysamom, my DS worked on the recent musical "Urinetown" at the Bader Theater, and also on the variety show -he is having a great time!

Can someone tell me more about new college? I applied there because I didn't know anything about the college system at U of T, so i just chose new college cuz it sounded cool. I will be commuting to U of T if i decide to enroll so, no relevance to me?

No, there's really no relevance. I'm a New Commuter (final year) and it has had a minimal impact on my life. The snowboarding trip they organized a couple of years ago was cool, though.

spikemom, that's great that your son worked on Urinetown. Both my daughter and niece have friends who were in the production and they both have also performed (many times) at Bader. It is a beautiful facility. I'm glad he's enjoying himself! :)

how has everyone's experiences with Univeristy college been? I'm just curious as i got into that.
