Harry Alford was almost surprised when his stretch of relative anonymity was ruffled this week.

It has been six months since a shoulder injury threw the goalie's final season into flux. Freshman Brian Phipps has thrived in Alford's absence as the No. 10 Terrapins (7-3) prepare to meet No. 7 Navy (8-1) tonight....

Seniors seek first victory against Navy
Adi Joseph
Issue date: 4/6/07 Section: Sports

Senior short stick Jimmy Borell walked around the Terrapin men's lacrosse team's locker room Tuesday wearing a Navy lacrosse T-shirt.

With the No. 10-ranked Terps (7-3) facing off against No. 7-ranked Navy (8-1) tonight, Borell wasn't wearing the shirt as a measure of his respect for the Midshipmen. Instead, he wears the shirt as a means to mentally prepare himself for the big game.

"This is huge for us. I want to beat them so bad," Borell said. "I worked a camp there, so I wear this shirt so it *es me off, gets me *ed off all day, so I don't forget they beat us the past three years."

Borell is the only Terp to have defeated Navy in his career, having beaten the Midshipmen while at Air Force for his freshman year. Meanwhile, the rest of the Terp seniors have gone three long years without a win over their in-state rival, despite back-to-back final four appearances. Making matters worse, the past two Navy wins have been determined by game-winning goals in the last 15 seconds of regulation.

The Terps haven't forgotten the stinging pain of the past two seasons and would love to ensure that they won't taste a bitter defeat again this season.

"Oh, it's so tough," senior long pole Ryan Clarke said. "Getting a goal scored with a minute left, it's just heartbreaking. I don't even want it to be close this year. I hope that we can get ahead by more than one goal and keep it that way, so they don't have that chance."

Due to the natures of the two teams, an early two-goal lead could be significant enough to hold on for the win. Neither team has topped 10 goals in any of the past eight games in the series. Both teams have reputations for being physical and defense-oriented.

As a result, the Terps know the team that wins will likely be the team that maximizes each individual possession. The Terps foresee each turnover, ground ball and face-off to be crucial in the expected slugfest.

"It's just a hard-nosed, hard-hitting game," senior defender Ray Megill said. "Every goal counts, every goal is important. You can't slack off at all. You've just got to play hard the entire game or else the other team will capitalize on it."

The rivalry is steeped in history; the two teams have met 80 times. Most notably, the Terps defeated Navy 20-13 in the 1975 National Championship, the last time the Terps won the title.

The past three Midshipmen victories have only added to the heated nature of the rivalry. And while the games are always intense, the Terp seniors have found motivation in not wanting to end their career 0-4 against Navy.

"It just motivates us to try that much harder," senior midfielder Chris Feifs said. "Every time you step on the field against a team like Navy, you've got to give your all. But losing two close games the past two years really lights the fire in us to get this win."

Last season, the Terps were in a similar position. The senior class, including first-team All-Americans Joe Walters and Bill McGlone, had lost to Johns Hopkins, the Terps' top rival, the first three years of their careers. But Walters put on a show with six goals, and the Terps cruised past the Blue Jays, a statement win that helped propel the Terps to a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.

The Terps can look to last season's senior statement as an example for what they aspire to do this season.

"Hopkins was a team that was always a big rivalry game for us, and we could never get enough done to beat them," Clarke said. "It's the same thing with Navy. It's always a big game every year - our crowd or theirs, it's always huge. Hopefully we can get it done this year."

This game can also be a signature win for the Terps. The Terps have yet to defeat a top-10 opponent this season, although they do have two wins over ranked opponents. And while Navy is coming off a loss to Georgetown last week, the win would be the biggest of the season thus far.

From the perspective of the players, especially the seniors, the win would mean more than simply a notch on the belt heading into the postseason. It would mean vindication after three years of losing. Coach Dave Cottle traditionally wants his team to focus on the now, but he understands - even expects - his team to come into this one fired up and ready to make a statement.

"You've got to play in the present, that's obvious. But you can learn from the past," Cottle said. "Our seniors are 0-3. I think that's the theme for our seniors - it's time to get a win against Navy."

It's April and the power programs of college lacrosse are positioning for the playoffs.

With the NCAA Tournament selection committee closely monitoring head-to-head matchups between Top 20 teams, the traditional heavyweight battles of late spring take on added importance.

Maryland and Navy will both be looking to avoid back-to-back losses when the two longtime rivals meet tonight in Annapolis. The sixth-ranked Midshipmen suffered their first defeat at the hands of Georgetown last Saturday while the No. 11 Terrapins are coming off a loss to Virginia.

"At this time of the year, there is always a great sense of urgency," Navy head coach Richie Meade said. "These are big, big games. They're big if you win, big if you lose."...

11 Maryland def. #6 Navy, 8-7 (2OT)

For Immediate Release

Men's Lacrosse Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-8773

Navy Men's Lax Unable to Hold On, Drops Double OT Decision to Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Second-year midfielder Dan Groot's goal 42 seconds into the second overtime period snapped Navy's three-game stronghold over Maryland, as the 11th-ranked Terps upset the No. 6 Navy men's lacrosse team, 8-7, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Friday evening in front of 14,625 fans. It is the third-largest documented crowd to see a game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and the 11th largest in NCAA Div. I history (regular-season game).

"I've always said that whenever you walk off the field after a game like this and you've won, you always think to yourself that you could have lost," said a disappointed Navy head coach Richie Meade. "And whenever you lose, you always think to yourself that you could have won. I think the game pretty much went the way we thought it would be. I'm disappointed that we didn't win, but I'm proud of our team and how we played."

Despite a two-goal deficit with just under six minutes remaining in the contest, Maryland kept its composure. The Terps trimmed the lead to one with 4:53 left when Michael Phipps fed Jeremy Sieverts who was slashing in front of the crease and one-timed it past Navy keeper Colin Finnegan's (Arnold, Md.). Minutes later, junior midfielder Drew Evans sent the game into overtime after his low-to-high shot sailed over Finnegan's right shoulder from more than 10 yards out with just seven seconds remaining in regulation.

"Evans' shot was a great individual effort," said Meade. "There was no way to defend it. He shot low to high, right handed and to the opposite side ... you get a goal for that."

Navy had its best opportunity to score when rookie midfielder Basil Daratsos (Niskayuna, N.Y.) fired off a shot in the first overtime period, only to have it stuffed by Terrapin goalkeeper Brian Phipps, who had a sensational game in goal with 13 stops.

Navy rookies Daratsos and Tim Paul (Parkton, Md.), starting his first-collegiate game in place of the injured Bruce Nechanicky (Montgomery Village, Md.), turned in solid performances for the Midshipmen, including early in the contest when Paul fed Daratsos for the game's first goal with just 1:42 elapsed. Daratsos finished the game with a pair of goals, while Paul scored back-to-back markers early in the third quarter.

"Timmy is a very good player and to be put in a situation like this, in a game like this, I couldn't have asked for a better performance," said Meade of his first-time starter Paul.

On the heels of Paul's two goals, senior attack Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) fired off his lone goal of the game at the 8:27 mark to give the Mids a 6-4 lead. Dingman added a pair of goals in the loss.

Navy outshot the Terps, 30-24, including a 15-5 advantage after the first two quarters. Maryland turned the tables in the second half, owning a 16-13 advantage, including a 10-5 edge in the third quarter. Navy face-off specialists William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) and Mikelis Visgauss (Setauket, N.Y.) did a fantastic job of giving the Midshipmen possession. The two combined (Wallace 7-11, Visgauss 6-7) to win 13-of-18 draws with the 19th taken by close defenseman Andy Tormey (Syracuse, N.Y.).

The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday when they play host to arch rival Army at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Senior Day. Action is set for 12:00 pm and will be carried live on 1430 WNAV, as well as CSTV with Jason Knapp and Sheehan Stanwick Burch calling the action.

Game Notes

It was a typical Navy-Maryland lacrosse game - hard-hitting, low-scoring, intense and exciting. A crowd of 14,625 - the third-largest in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium history - braved frigid temperatures to watch the 82nd renewal of this storied rivalry. Those diehard fans were treated to a classic as the Midshipmen and Terrapins went toe-to-toe for 67? minutes in a well-played, physical affair....

Army Vs. Navy - The Series
• On Saturday, Army and Navy will meet for the 75th-consecutive year ... it's the longest continuous series between Navy and another team on the lax field.
• Navy leads the series, 54-26-3, winning 11-straight games, including nine Star Games.

• Just three Army players enter Saturday's game having scored a goal against Navy ... junior Justin Bokmeyer (1g), sophomore Kevin LoRusso (1g) and junior Paul Wigdzinski (1g) ... senior Ryan Chase has pitched in two assists ...the four players account for just five of the 65 points scored against the Mids between 2004-06.
• Navy has played Army twice in each of the last two seasons ... there have been only four times in the 83-game history (dating back to 1924) that the two programs have battled twice in one season (1978 and 1981 in the NCAA Tournament, 2005 and 2006 in the Patriot League Tournament.

Recapping Last Year's Star Game
• Led by All-American Matt Russell in goal, fifth-ranked Navy staved off a second-half comeback bid by No. 16 Army, and earned an 11-10 win over the Black Knights at Michie Stadium, the Mids' ninth-consecutive Star Game win.
• One of the most entertaining Army-Navy games in recent memory, the 2006 Star Game marked the first one-goal game between the two teams since 2003 and just the second in the last 12 meetings (does not include the '06 Patriot League Championship game).
• Navy built a 4-0 lead with just three minutes remaining in the opening quarter with four different players finding the back of the net, including middie Tommy Wallin who put the Mids on the scoreboard first at 12:30.
• Nick Mirabito scored his second goal of the day when Wallin drew a crowd as he dashed towards the goal ... Wallin made a heads-up play by tossing the ball back to Mirabito, who gave Navy a 5-2 lead heading into the half.
• The second half featured 10 goals between the two teams, including six by Army ... the Black Knights scored four of the first six goals in the third quarter, as the two-man show of John Walker and Mike Obringer carried Army.
• Navy padded its lead on back-to-back goals by Billy Looney and Ian Dingman with seven minutes to play in the third quarter.
• Army's Matt Scheel scored on an unsettled play with 1:20 remaining in the quarter ... Obringer electrified the Army crowd when rippled the net with just six seconds on the clock.
• The Black Knights used the momentum to open the fourth quarter with a goal by Scheel at the 13:26 mark ... Scheel knotted the game at 9-9 after picking up a loose ball and punching it into the goal.
• Navy was bound and determined not to give Army the lead as Looney took a pass from Wallin and fired off a 15-yarder with 10:03 to play to put the Mids back up by one ... Wallin gave Navy an 11-9 lead when he placed his shot over Fullerton's shoulder with just over five minutes to play.
• Scheel, who had scored two of Army's last three goals, made it a hat trick as his right-handed shot caught the inside corner of the left post at the four-minute mark.

Senior Salute
• Though the Midshipmen will play host to the Patriot League Tournament on April 27 and 29, Navy will honor its 11 seniors in a pregame ceremony.

Billy Looney was one of the most highly regarded recruits the Navy lacrosse program has landed in recent years. Looney was a US Lacrosse High School All-American and had scholarship offers from most of the top programs in the country. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder, who was also a Washington-area All-Metro selection as a football player at DeMatha Catholic, chose Navy over Maryland and Cornell primarily for family reasons. Two older brothers, Brendan and Steve, were already members of the Navy varsity when Billy was a high school senior.

"Billy wasn't really sure he wanted to come here. I think he was motivated by the opportunity to play alongside his brothers. I also don't think he could have lived with the fact his brothers both graduated from here and he didn't," Navy head coach Richie Meade said....

Eighth-Ranked Navy Lax Claims 10th-Straight Star Game Win Over Army

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seniors Tommy Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y.) and Billy Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) scored goals in the final nine minutes to lead the eighth-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (9-2, 6-0 Patriot League) to a 12-9 victory over arch rival Army (6-5, 3-3) Saturday afternoon in front of 11,370 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Seven different Midshipmen scored goals, while another two chipped in assists as Navy concluded the Patriot League portion of its schedule undefeated at 6-0.

It looked as thought it would be a blowout early on as the Mids opened up a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the game. Army briefly stopped Navy's momentum at the 6:20 mark when sophomore attackman Brooks Korvin fired off a shot from seven yards out.

Navy, however, answered less than two minutes later when Looney fed junior Nick Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) who was sitting on the door step to push Navy's lead to 4-1.

Army cut into the lead when junior middie Paul Wigdzinski beat Navy sophomore Sean Standen (South Hadley, Mass.) from eight yards out on the right side.

Mirabito scored his second goal of the date, shooting straight up the middle on keeper Adam Fullerton with 5:31 to go. Navy then took a 6-2 lead when Wallin found midfielder William Wallace (Bloomfield Village, Mich.) cutting to the middle with just 32 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing face-off, the Mids failed to get a specialist out in what the referee thought was a reasonable amount of time and in turn gave Army possession for delay of game. Army wasted little time in setting up, as rookie Brandon Butler found Jason Peyer who tucked in his first-collegiate goal against the Mids with just five seconds remaining in the opening half.

Navy scored back-to-back goals just 29 seconds apart in the first three minutes of the second half to open up a five-goal lead, its largest of the game. Army, though, went on a five-goal run to knot the score at the end of the third quarter. After a goal by Justin Bokmeyer at the 12:17 mark, the Black Knights scored three-straight goals in unique fashion. Wigdzinski fired off a shot that was initially saved by Navy keeper Colin Finnegan (Arnold, Md.), but the ball popped up and Finnegan lost site of it as it fell to the ground and literally rolled across the line.

Five minutes later, Ryan Chase sent a shot that again was initially saved by Finnegan, but Peyer snatched it out of the air and poked it in the open net. At the 3:43 mark, Korvin managed to get off a slow bouncing shot as he was falling to the ground that somehow found its way into the goal.

Army knotted the game at eight-all when second-year middie Alex Rhoads punched in a shot from 10 yards out.

The Mids wasted little time in regaining the lead, as junior Mikelis Visgauss (Setauket, N.Y.) won the draw to start the fourth quarter and fed senior Victor Barger (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who raced to the left side of the field untouched and found a gap. Barger, a long stick defensive midfielder, has produced three goals on three shots this season.

Army tied the game at 9-9 (10:43) when Bokmeyer threaded a pass from the left side of the field that went right through a pack of players and LoRusso dunked it in as he sat on the crease.

Seeing a five-goal lead disappear, the Mids found themselves in the same position they had experienced in recent weeks. Navy was coming off back-to-back one-goal losses to nationally-ranked programs Georgetown and Maryland and in both of those games the Mids held the halftime lead. The Hoyas outscored the Mids, 5-2, in the third quarter, while Maryland owned a 2-0 advantage in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. And against Army, the Black Knights found their way back into the game by outscoring Navy, 5-2, in the third.

"I don't feel like we led down in those previous two games," said Meade. "We stood toe-to-toe with Georgetown and Maryland. Sometimes you have to deal with the emotional baggage that comes with adversity or success."

Wallin gave the Mids the lead for good with 8:31 to go as he fought off a triple-team that sent him to the ground as he release a shot from five yards out. Navy tacked on a second goal with 4:15 to play as Wallin found Dingman for his seventh hat trick of the season. Looney sealed the win with his goal at the 2:01 mark.

"When it was 9-9, I felt like we needed to play with some poise and experience and we had that today," added Meade. "Our senior players made some senior plays. I thought our kids did a good job of maintaining their composure."

Finnegan made six stops against the Black Knights, while Fullerton made 10 saves against the Mids in a game that pit the nation's No. 1 and 2 defensive units against one another. The 12 goals by the Mids marked the first game Army's defense has given up double-digit goals since dropping last year's season finale to Ohio State, 12-9.

Navy's 11 seniors, who were honored in a pregame ceremony, own a 6-0 record against Army, the most wins by a class in Navy lax history.

"To beat a rival like Army, even though I have a brother who graduated from there, is pretty special," said Dingman. "It's not only good for us, but for our school and everyone around our program. It makes everyone proud of being Navy."

Navy will be back in action next Saturday when it travels to Baltimore to face ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins in a 3:00 pm battle to be televised live by ESPNU and locally on WMAR Ch. 2.

Ian Dingman had just scored the clinching goal in Navy's 12-9 lacrosse victory over Army late in the fourth quarter yesterday when a Black Knights defender shoved him in the back and another appeared to say something to him. Dingman retaliated, was given a one-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and, as he left the field, Coach Richie Meade grabbed a fi****l of his jersey and screamed at him.

It was that sort of day for the Midshipmen (9-2, 6-0 Patriot League). The victory, before a crowd of 11,370 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, was their 12th in a row over Army. Yet it hardly was their best performance....
