Hi, Im a current high school senior from the south. I’m in a bit of a predicament as to whether I want to attent Mines or Boulder. Currently, im wanting to study Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering, specified in molecular biology type stuff. Ive seen both campuses, and really don’t know which would be better for me. Im very focused on my education over partying, but i feel like my options while attending are more limited at Mines, socially and major wise. Just looking for some feedback or thoughts about the engineering programs and social aspects of each school.
Mines certainly has fewer majors offered, but that may not matter to you. Even if you start in engineering and decide you don’t like it, will you want to switch to art, theater, or history? Those would all be hard (if not impossible) at Mines but available at CU. I think the engineering offerings are similar quality at each school, but if you are interested in aerospace, pick CU, if you prefer petroleum or mining, go to Mines.
There are some obvious differences. CU is D1 with big sports, marching band, music, Shakespeare festival, more political. Boulder is more urban than Golden. Golden is a nice town but it’s not Boulder.
Don’t think that Mines students don’t party. They can be wild (been to a few) and CU students can be very studious.
thank you, i appreciate the reply. the thing im the most worried about is if i decide i want to pursue a more biological based engineering or applied science field. do you know much about mines offerings for that?
Hi, I’m in the same position and I moved here a few months ago in hopes of going to Mines. I was accepted yesterday but lately, I’ve been considering going into medicine. If that’s your end goal, to go into medicine, look in CU Boulder- they have an engineering and pre-med route. However, if you want to go strictly into engineering, go to Mines. Mines is known for its engineering program and I’ve been reading up on it and I’ve heard that lots of their graduates go on to work with Google, Amazon, and those other top-notch places. Additionally, the social aspect you were talking about, because Mines is so tiny, you’ll be able to meet just about everyone in the school in a short amount of time and make good friendships and also I’ve heard you get to closer to professors so if you have an issue understanding something, you’ll be able to talk directly to them- that’s the good thing about it being a tight knit community. But yes, about the science field- if engineering is your end goal, then Mines all the way but if you plan to go outside of engineering into something more science-related, I’d say Boulder is a better option
