I recieved a letter in the mail a few days ago from Colorado School of Mines and they said that they'll be sending me a "Golden Admission Application" in September to apply. I dont have to write an essay or anything. I basically give them some personal infornation and my SAT scores. I was wondering, is it basically like automatic acceptance? I'm not sure what exactly it is and the difference between their golden admission application and a common application. I'm interested in Colorado School of mines because they have the major I want which only a few universities in the U.S. have.

It means they really want you to apply, so as long as there aren’t any terrible blunders in your app, you are VERY likely to get accepted.
The main difference is the common app is longer, and probably has an app fee.

It is NOT a “shoo in”. Their acceptance rate is very competitive. It just means you get a jump on being admitted. We met with admissions before Christmas break and the freshman class was already full.

Mines does NOT use the common app so it’s not the same thing. They just have a very easy application process…but high standards for getting in.

I would not say you’re “very likely” but it depends on your stats. A neighbor kid didn’t get in with a 34 ACT and 3.9. My son had a 34 ACT and a 5.0/4.0 and #1 of 227 class rank, plus loads of community college classes (He’ll start with 55 credits).

I got the same letter and I’m thinking that it isnt a auto acceptance but a school where I feel I can get into as somewhere between a safety and a match

My son got the same letter, and we’re thrilled, but we know that it really is no guarantee of admission. We are in the Wash DC area, and we are looking for a non-liberal arts university with a reputation in engineering. Mines fits the bill, and a lot of the govt and international agencies here seek out the grads as consultants. But, we’ve got another year to go. His GPA is not going to be above a 3.7, but he’s accelerated in math (finished AP CalcBC and into MultiVar/linear algebra), but very weak in the critical reading area. Haven’t taken the official SAT1’s yet, but took subject tests SAT Math1 and 2 and pretty certain he did close to an 800 on both. He’s been on the crew team for three years (Scholar Athlete all three), and selected for the National Park Service Conservation Corps two years in a row ($$ helps!). He’ll probably consider RIT, VATech, Purdue, UWisc, and four more smaller ones if we can find them!.

Here are the stats for the Class of 2018 - just reported to us on 7/11. They said it is their “most prepared class to date”:

13,000+ applications
1020 freshman
150 transfer (my son had 47 of 55 community college credits accepted but enrolling as a freshman)
57% Colorado
43% OOS and international
Average ACT: 30
Average SAT: 1320
Average H.S. GPA: 3.8
