Colorado School of Mines

Looking for reviews and thoughts of this school as the reviews and information are limited online. Student is interested in engineering, physics and math. Local school has no knowledge of school.

Colorado School of Mines has its own forum here at CC. Lots of helpful info there: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/colorado-school-mines/

@FoxWarrior Applied math and applied physics are very strong, , as well as statistics. Which engineering field do you have in mind? Anything chemical oriented is outstanding, chemical engineering, geochemistry, petroleum engineering. Geophysics is likewise outstanding. Computer science is a little short staffed right now, but check back and see if they hired any new faculty and ask about that. Mechanical is very very strong and leads to careers in Colorado aerospace industry. No need for an aerospace degree, and there are some classes, but CU Boulder has many more specialized aerospace classes to pick from.

@FoxWarrior Also, the size of Mines means its very personal and Mines hires teaching focused professors and research focused professors. The teaching staff teaches 80% of time and does research 20% of time. The research staff is more like 50-50%. So the teaching is very very good and students get a lot of attention. CU Boulder is more of a research school, so less attention to how a professor teachers, with slightly less strong students, but coming up the curve. Mines is more male dominated right now, but the gender balance will come with time. CU Engineering is at least as male dominated, although CU overall has plenty of girls in teacher education, business, arts and sciences etc.
