Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

hey guys! i figured that i should start participating in this thread after following it for a few days :)) im also super nervous–i’ve never felt so anxious for a decision/result before! it’s comforting knowing that many of us are feeling the same way

@dr0wning @ThePedestrian i go to a small public vocational school that’s pretty well known nationally (not giving it away though lmao) and so our courses also tend to be more challenging than those of regular schools. i think as part of the “holistic review,” colleges look at students’ GPAs in the context of their high schools. so my GPA would be compared to the GPAs of others in my school.

@melonmelly Welcome! I lurked on CC before joining, and even then I didn’t comment here until December!
Yeah, I had heard that they consider your GPA compared to the GPA of another student at your school, not a small rural school in Iowa or a super-selective private school in New York.

@dr0wning some people self study a few more APs but not a lot and not many people self-study APs just because all classes at school are really hard and are honors and AP levels even though they are not APs.

@melonmelly That’s what I think as well. My school also doesn’t have unweighted GPAs so I really have no clue how I would compare

@ThePedestrian I’m from Cary! Are you from NC too?

Isn’t it true that the schools get your school gpa scale and class catalogue see if you are taking that most difficult classes possible at YOUR school?

Yeah, your school should be sending in a school profile with your transcripts that details that the structure of your school’s curriculum and the course offerings.

@dr0wning My GPA is a 3.97 but I would check out the profile for the class of 2019! Heres a link: http://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/classprofile/2019. I think it also depends on the rigor of your courseload. If you’ve taken mostly AP/IB/Advanced classes then the admissions officers will probably be more willing to overlook a lower unweighted GPA… Best of luck!! (lol your username=me)

@cl938803 yeah! charlotte

I feel like the result threads have two types of people.

  1. "I had a 4.0 UW GPA and a 2390, but didn't get in. This sucks."
  2. "I had a 3.5 UW GPA and a 2010, but got in. This is great."

Any hope for the people in the middle? @alpha525

@cl938803 I looked at that before but I don’t see any info on GPA, though I’m sure it’s floating around somewhere. I’ll search it!
lmao that’s what I said about @unready too
I’m kinda glad that everyone’s a lot more active today! It’s nice talking to you guys

@graceann Well, the majority of applicants to Columbia are probably in the middle. The majority of applicants probably don’t post here either so I have no idea.

Question: Are the applicant pools for CC and SEAS evaluated separately? Like are CC applicants just competing with other CC applicants for spots and SEAS applicants competing with other SEAS applicants?

Yea @graceann I’m wondering the same thing lol

Does anyone know what the application status screen would look like. I know some schools have flashing animations if you’re accepted, and if the first line isn’t “Congratulations!” you’re done. That’s the scariest thing to think about tbh

@ThePedestrian “On behalf of the admissions committee…”

@celerity That’s a really good question. Does anyone else know?

My friend applied ED to SEAS and I’m hoping we’re not in the same pool lol.

@ThePedestrian @alpha525 “Thank you for your interest in Columbia University. On behalf of the admissions commitee, I would like to welcome you…” or “I regret to inform you…” lol acceptance/rejection letters all sounds similar
@graceann I’m pretty much in the middle, too. But I’ve seen people call 2200-2300 SAT and 3.7-3.9 UW GPA “low” and I don’t really know if that’s really considered low in terms of Columbia admissions.

They’re different colleges, so I would assume that they have different admissions officers

No, it’s the same officers. But obviously, they look for different things.
