Hello,
I’m interested in studying anthropology and/ or archeology, but Barnard doesn’t have an archeology major or minor. I’m applying as a transfer student and I was wondering if I could take archeology as a minor at Columbia?
Thank you

I know this isn’t related, but have you thought about Bryn Mawr?

Yes, I’m also planning on applying to Bryn Mawr.

So, Columbia’s Archaeology department is not the biggest stand-alone, and is associated with Art History, not Anthro. You can definitely take courses offered through the department, and my understanding is that you CAN declare a Columbia major, provided that an equivalent major is not offered at Barnard. Because Archaeology’s status at Columbia is a little ambiguous, I’d email someone, perhaps in Barnard’s Anthro/Art History department, to see what the deal is. Here’s CC’s departmental website: [Archaeology | Columbia College](<a href=“Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University”>Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University)

Thank you very much. That is quite helpful.

One of my best friends at Barnard is an archaeology major. It can be done, and I know she’s not alone.

D2 has a friend who is an anthropology major at Barnard and absolutely loves the department there.

Majoring in Anthropology

The major is intended to train students to apply anthropological perspectives to a variety of social domains. Students who choose this major are exposed to three of anthropology’s four traditional subfields: socio-cultural anthropology, archaeology, and linguistic anthropology. Also they may elect to concentrate in any one of these subfields for their advanced coursework and the capstone senior thesis. In particular, all majors engage in two semesters of independent research, typically substantial fieldwork, during their senior year. Our students are strongly encouraged to study abroad during their junior year, or in the summer between their junior and senior year.
