Columbia College in Chicago

We went to a college fair last night where the guy from Columbia made quite a pitch for the school's music, recording and film scoring facilities and all the connections students can make there. The school has 12,000 students and seems to take just about anyone--no auditions required for admission. We have never heard of this school----any one out there with any knowledge of Columbia in Chicago???? Thanks all!

I don't know a thing about recording or film scoring, but I do know that because no auditions are required, the caliber of music students varies a great deal, and you do not find the strongest overall musicians.

That said, we know a boy who went to Columbia two years ago (did not have the skills to do an audition anywhere, but had a good time as a rock drummer) and loves it there. He is doing some interesting stuff.

I just wouldn't send a really serious performance musician there, but it might be great for more industry related coursework and connections.

I agree with Allmusic.

We live in the area and I know of no one who has attended Columbia or has even considered it. But I cannot offer you any info on it.

I want to go there as a saw that there is a program about music for the screen. I don’t want to become a soundmaster who is concerned with setting up the equipment but I want to get the musican knowledge there and some stuff like this. I want to compose music for the screen

My son recently graduated from Columbia College of Chicago’s program in Audio Arts & Acoustics. He worked with a number of musicians and composers there - definitely a different focus than most of the people who post here (CCC tends more towards contemporary/popular music and definitely doesn’t have the name recognition). CCC for live sound reinforcement (S’s concentration) is well respected in many professional settings; don’t have much info about your particular interests, sorry.

Dead thread, folks ; )

kmccrindle, there’s no such thing as a dead thread in the music forum. ;)

Old threads never die. They just get linked. ;)

Oops, shouldn’t have erased my post then that was responding to the OP, albeit belatedly. Short version is scoring = composing aka music school and beware of open admissions in that kind of scenario.

kanye west went there for a year or so, you can look up their wikipedia page to see a list of alumni
