Columbia College vs. School of General Studies

Congrats nrc, I’m proud of you. I know that is pretty meaningless to you since you don’t know me at all, but I still wanted to say it. I am also an “older than normal” student and am happy to see you succeed. I’d love to hear how Harvard treats you.

Found some amusing posts reflecting what a number of Columbia students really think of GS students:

Congratulations nrc2107!

I am a GS grad from some time ago, and am a proud alum. GS has always been on my resume. I was able to get into Columbia Business School using the GS 5-year program, which is not available to any of the other Columbia undergraduate colleges.

GS alums should remember to participate to the annual fund to help fund more scholarships.

I don’t get the discussions about English vs. Latin on the diploma. I think only the ■■■■■ cares about this. If you read through old threads, I suspect that the same ■■■■■ keeps signing on under different names. This ■■■■■ keeps comparing Columbia GS to Harvard Extension and points out Latin vs. English.

There are insecure or mean-spirited people who always try to put others down, regardless of which college they go to or what they have accomplished. When I went to Columbia Business School, an interviewer once asked me why I didn’t go to Harvard Business School! Just ignore those people and stop feeding the ■■■■■■.

B@B is a lot of fun, but everything on there should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, there are more than a couple posts where people show respect or indifference towards GS as well.

http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2004/20040319h.jpg

boredatbutler could have been written by fcking anyone, get over yourselves.

Asking about ANYTHING on B@B is like going to bathroom grafitti to read about current events. It’s unfiltered, brain diarrhea.

The things I’ve learned [to ignore] on B@B are such delicious tid-bits as:

Barnard girls are fat, give off an unpleasant odor, and basically exist as bedroom fodder for SEAS and CC students.

GS people are predominantly elderly morons. Some of them are elderly morons who may have accomplished interesting things. Elderly morons, nonetheless.

Foreign students, especially Asians for some reason, aren’t worthy of being a part of CC. The “we don’t want you here” statement is fairly common on B@B.

Transfer students will never be accepted as full members of any undergraduate school. Don’t even try.

The staff of the university, Hispanic kitchen staff especially, needs to constantly be reminded of their place (meaning, YOU serve us).

All Columbia students are miserable and cannot wait for it all to end.

Now, after stopping in at B@B a few too many times, I’ve learned not to judge Columbia’s undergraduate population by it. In fact, that’s the ONLY thing I’ve learned. The site is a goof, a distraction, and not a way to come to understand broader sentiments. So take it as that, a joke.

Hey all,

Earlier posts have argued that GS students obtain a different degree than Columbia College students, yet on the GS homepage, it is advertised that GS students receive the “same” degrees as other Columbia undergraduates. Can anyone explain this?

The argument about the diploma is tiresome. If you are really interested about the diploma, it’s just a google away:

[A Brief History of Columbia Diplomas | General Studies Lounge](http://gslounge.com/ColumbiaDiplomas)

GS uses the same standard template that most schools at Columbia use.

As far as the website advertising that GS students receive the same diploma as CC, I find it hard to believe. Post a URL or it didn’t happen.

In my opinion, I’d rather be able to read it.

It dawned on me that your reference to degree may be more curriculum based. Word is that GS students can take most of the same core classes that CC offers. A lot of other classes are intermingled with students from all undergraduate schools. But, do not think that GS is some sort of back door into CC. It is still its own school unlike the Eli Whitney Program at Yale College. It’s a different undergraduate school for a different kind of student. So if you want to work it so you take the same sources as CC students, it’s possible. But you’re still graduating from GS with a GS degree/diploma.

Sorry, supposed to be just the link, but click on it nonetheless and note the last sentence of the first paragraph.

I guess the “same” diploma means the two diplomas have the same value
(since they take the same courses, it is true.)

I am a Chinese student admitted by GS
Yes, my High School GPA is low, but the tests are really very difficult.
During my high school every week we would take a maths exam, the average score is just 60 (full score is 100, but if I do not work ont any problem, my score will be -20 :frowning: )
One of my classmates often gets 20+ in these maths tests, but in the end he was admitted by Cambridge University (UK) ( and his major is Maths) Irony

Schrader,
What the statement is implying is that unlike some non-traditional colleges, GS isn’t segregated from the rest of the undergraduate student body. For instance, the Harvard Extension School, while technically providing a degree from Harvard Univ., their student body is not allowed to take the same curriculum as Harvard College. They only have a few exceptions, and even with those exceptions, they are still limited. GS, with exception to financial aid and facilities, students are treated the same academically as say CC or SEAS. Really though, a school that was reconstructed to support Veterans whom already had a source of financial aid. You can’t blame them for the lack of.

At least that’s my take on it, someone feel free to correct me if that is not the case.

I guess something is the same or it isn’t. On the GS webpage, it is stated very plainly. GS seems to have generated a lot of contreversy, yet despite the durable nature of this thread its remains difficult to discern between that which is truth and that which is hyperbole.

I think

if you are a talented and diligent student, you will feel good even you are “just a GS student” in some people’s eyes

and the appreciation from your future employer and graduate school AO will prove all.

WE DO THE BEST, GOD DO THE REST!

Actually why I choose GS is because it promised me the same curriculum, which means I can prove myself on the academic Arena.

GSer, add oil ^_^

Well, sent my admission rejection letter to GS yesterday. I have to admit, I am disappointed to not be going there this fall, but it’s just too damn expensive. I know all the controversy surrounding GS but at the end of the day, it’s still an amazing school/university and like most things in life you get what you want out of it. Anyone who is fully informed of what GS is and isn’t will do fine there. I’m proud to say I was a GS admit just wish I had $100k laying around that I didn’t need…

Good luck to all of you applying and attending.

Hexieshehui, you might want to rid yourself of your Chinglish before you step on campus.

Do GS students, who claim that their degree is same as CC, think that Harvard Extension degree is same as Harvard College degree ?
