Columbia College vs. School of General Studies

capwoo- I did get a call, but I don’t think everyone does. To my knowledge, nobody is informed by email so maybe she was just trying to sound neutral. It sucks not to know.

Congrats, allyn!!! I’m glad to hear you’re in too. I’m also waiting in financial aid… I hope it’s not terrible.

I don’t know if this is still an issue, but there is a special dual-degree program through the school of General Studies that cannot be accessed through CC- the Jewish Theological Seminary has a joint program with the school of General Studies in which students earn two bachelor’s degrees- one from JTS and one from Columbia- in four years. In order to participate in this program, students must enroll in the school of general studies, NOT columbia college

Can “non-traditional students” apply to CC?

Omg…
3 months already… What am I still waiting for???

Ny80, you should give them a call and as them about the status. They should be wrapping up decisions now for GS – they had told me it would be till mid-July.

I emailed them but they told me:

Hi Ny80,
*
The admissions committee is hoping to have all decisions made by July 15th.* You should be hearing from us within the next two weeks or so.*
*
Cheers,
Kristin

I now wonder what that rejection letter will look like…

Ally, I also interviewed with Ivonne. What kind of questions were you asked and how soon did you find out you were accepted

I sat for the GSAE today. It went well. Ivonne told me I did well and that my application package is “looking very promising.” I’m very excited about this, however, a final decision (for the fall 2009 semester) can not be made unless I submit my official transcripts by Friday (GS has a copy of my unofficial transcript). I would have to pay NYU a little over $4,000 in order to receive them. I could work, save money, and be considered for the spring 2010 semester, but I leave for US Marine Corps Recruit Training in February. NYU’s financial aid is just awful (I can not stress this enough). I just wanted to vent.

I’m applying for the Spring to Columbia GS. The deadline for Early Action is October 1st. I have almost everything complete except my test scores. The issue with this is I took the SAT’s in 1999 which misses the 8 year cutoff that they’re willing to accept test scores.

Will I have to take the GSAE admission exam? This would mean I would have to fly to NYC. I currently live in California.

Is there a slight chance that they’ll still accept my old SAT scores?

Nabu- My SAT scores were 1 year too old and i had to take the GSAE. It appears you have one chance to take the ACT before October deadline. That may be your only option that doesn’t involve going to NY.

I can’t help to be curious though, why not attend UC davis/ UCLA/ UCSF etc? Are they not friendly to non-trads I would assume?

FreeAtLast: I would apply to UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, etc only if they were accepting applications for Spring 2010. Those schools aren’t though and I would have to wait till Fall 2010. The only schools that are accepting Spring 2010 applicants are UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced. Not really interested. I would like to go back to a 4-year school sooner. UCSF doesn’t apply since it’s a grad school.

Thanks for your advice on the ACT. I guess I’ll look into that. I’m surprised Columbia didn’t accept your 1 year old SAT scores.

If I decide to take the ACT, is the writing test required?

I got in! I got the call on Monday! Soooo now I am wondering about financial aid. How have all of the other students of GS paid for their education? Loans I’m assuming? Obviously there IS a way to do it otherwise no one would be able to attend. Does anyone have any advice on the funding?

OOoops! On waiting list for university housing. What are my chances of getting a slot for this fall? Anybody got one yet? I haven’t heard anything abt my scholarship yet. Only a miracle from God can get me in this fall.

I’m on the housing waitlist too. I still have no idea about financial aid.

Well, Allyn, there’s some comfort in numbers buh this anxiety is eating my heart out!

Has anyone heard about financial aid, housing, or transfer credit yet?

I’ve got my finaid information (better than I thought) and am currently waiting on the transfer credit stuff. I sincerely hope they don’t screw me over too much. If they haven’t sent anything to you in the mail, you can always check to see if a financial aid award letter has at least been posted online – that’s how I got my information a week before the mail came with the details.

I don’t know anything about housing since I currently live right across the Hudson (Jersey City) and plan on commuting there. Thank goodness, as it significantly reduces my overall cost.

I haven’t heard anything about financial aid as of yet. I’m worried about my credits though! I hear they’re sticklers about it. I desperately do not want to re-take all my science and english core again etc! Has anyone heard anything yet/ know anything about their policies?
