Columbia CS MS or Cornell CS MEng

Hi, everyone, I was rejected from both phd program but accepted to the MS program. Does anyone know more about the two programs? I will choose to work for a few years after graduation of master. I may go back to academic again so I hope the master program will help a bit in my phd application. Could you help me? Any advice is welcome!

anyone give some advice?

MEng is usually considered a terminal degree and the research components might be less, but schools and programs differ. Also what you do in the few years till ur PhD application might make a difference (say some research). MS could be more research oriented and could make it easier to get into a future PhD. But all said and done Cornell's reputation is better than Columbia's, if I were you I would check with the students or the graduate advisor if its difficult to get into a PhD program after an MEng and unless very negative advice comes in go for Cornell.

Thank you, floopydrive! You are so kind!

Both are good departments. Cornell's is stronger overall, but which dept is better really depends on the specific area. This is especially important if you're thinking about PhD. Columbia's dept is very strong in security, natural language processing, and computer graphics.

Unfortunately, Columbia's MS is a MEng. Its a 1 year degree with coursework so both are on equal footing. I'd visit the schools and decide. Cornell's reputation in CS might be slightly better but since you'll be paying a ton of money, makesure you should at least enjoy wherever you are.

Thanks to herenow and Blah2009.

Yes, it is a lot of money. That's why I'm worried about the work placement for both two master program. I heard Cornell with an average salary of 70k+ after MEng degree. Is that true? Is that also true for someone with no work experiences? How about columbia cs master placement?

If I go to one of these two universities, probably I'll find a tempory job in NYC. What kind of jobs are provided for CSers in NYC? Are they easy to find for graduates from the two departments? Any information is valueable! Thanks a lot!
