i loved this place...

i can't believe it !!!. I got into CC.

good recs, international student living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Didnt apply financial aid, good essays, great counselor rec

Im so happy right now. I wasnt even going to ED, but my counslelor told me to give it a shot. This was the only ivy league I was applying to and I got in !!!!!!!!!!!

hm.. this is strange, indeed.
my theory is that columbia is going for the "pure intellectual" type this year.
you know, really into a certain area, but not all that obsessed with academics?
people with genuine interest.. interest that isn't so much mixed with selfish ambitions.
or maybe they just wanted to make a point. shrug
orrr perhaps they're hoping to lower their average SAT/GPA to encourage more applicants, and therefore, make their acceptance rate lower so that they seem more "elite" oO

LOL, I likw your theories navyblue, I even think the one about "pure intellectual" and "genuine interest" could be VERY possible. This year, a LOT of 1300+ and low end 1400s were admitted...

"perhaps they're hoping to lower their average SAT/GPA to encourage more applicants"
This i doubt though, haha.

Either way, they are most likely not going to recruit total idiots. People with average or below average stats must've been amazing in some other areas...

I have a strange feeling that CU class of 09 is going to be an interesting bunch...

I think so too

CC deferred....
1570 SAT
800 800 780 SAT II
HS R:2
however, hated by guidance counsellor

SAT scores arent everything ..

my extracurriculars were great though.. im captain of the speedo U.A.E swimming team and have travelled to cairo, france and milan for speedo championships. my school record was ok also. gpa (unw) 3.0

accepted CC

great interview, good essay

Deferred..
1440 (680V, 780M-took it once)
800 MIIC, 750 Bio, 650 Writing
3.83 UW, taking the most advanced classes possible..
Pretty good, but not excellent.. ECs, really into Visual Art..,sent slides..
nothing special during the summer...the diversity factor..which doesn't
help..lol.. being an Asian..wasn't interviewed...don't know why...
Competitve private school..didn't apply for the financial aid.
Int. student in U.S...been here for about 5 years

Last year, two ppl got in ED -both legacies..- from my school, and one of them wasn't considered a great-academic-scholar type..lol...She was into theaters...

um..so I kinda hoped for the good news while realizing my weaknesses..

yea it sux

Dont worry, Kyong-Hun, i got rejected (posted my stats earlier). Deferral isnt the end of the world. Having a low GPA and being ASIAN killed me (im multiracial..shouldnt have mentioned that in retrospect). Whatever...where well all end up, accepted to, deferred, or rejected from this place, is where we were meant to be. I have found so many opportunities, programs, amazing joint-degrees at other schools that are better than anything columbia can offer, so it worked out for the best. Despite the pretty campus with nice architecture, NYC, and the 'amazing' core, people that go to columbia can tell you it really isnt the greatest...most are too stressed or high to appreciate it anyway.

http://www.columbiaspectator.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/12/21/41c83b6007dcc

Everything has a blessing.
good luck

ooo somewhat scary article, but I kind of think someone who gets killed like that is in an actual fight, since that guy was homeless and obviously wasn't being robbed, and killing isn't necessary for a robbing, so I think the guy got in some trouble, an argument. . .

my friend just told me about this website thing not too long ago and i think its pretty cool! i like hearing about other seniors outside this little bubble i live in...

i got deferred from columbia too so i decided to post. i was actually VERY okay with being deferred because i know some friends who were rejected. i think for ED acceptees, columbia is looking for people that have something NO ONE else has..and they defer the rest who are also qualified.

anyways:
790M/800V (took once..PURE luck. seriously it was a miracle), 760 chem, 800 math 2c, 780 writing
GPA: 5.70 and 3.98 i forgot which is unweighted and weighted. got one B this semester so GPA will go down
7 out of 585

extracurricular:
part time checker at grocery store 12
part time cashier at panera bread 12..i quit recently
academic decathlon/octathlon 10-12
founder/VP of enivronmental club 11,12

awards:
national mert semi-finalist
AP scholar w/ distinction
academic decathlon awards from this year and last year and academic octathlon crap too
new record in 100y backstroke at districts
some other swimming awards from USS teams
some piano stuff..nothing special though. im not too good :(

misc:
chinese, female, born and raised in houston
I had an interview but it was kinda bad because i had never been to the houston med center before and i parked in the wrong garage. he had to walk in the rain to come find me..not too good...but the interview was okay

yeah ive heard scary stuff about columbia being next to harlem and all but that was only from a friend's dad who was trying to discourage her from going there. most say its really safe.

janice

wow...a lot of people with really great stats were deferred..
what's up with this? i thought a college with ED would eagerly accept qualified ED applicants

Accepted CC

SAT I 1490
SAT II Writing 700, Math I 730, Physics 800
TOEFL 297
International Student
Indian living in Dubai, U.A.E.
British education- so I don't have a GPA - did do well in exams though
Recs from teachers who liked me
Essay abt travel experiences
Enough activities to show I don't think only of academics
Didn't apply for financial aid

congrats!!!

Is it that the international students are just getting word?

I honestly believe that Columbia, unlike many other schools, realize that numbers just arent as important as other factors. Besides GPA, SAT scores are really just indicators as to whether or not your GPA was inflated or not. I think that Columbia wants dedicated and unique individuals on campus and not just brainiacs (although I am sure there are some). Just my opinion after seeing some of the results.

accepted SEAS

SAT 1220 (530V 690M) 660, 610, 540
ranked 3 (top 1%)
good recs, essay, ecs, etc.

WOW, really? CONGRATS!!!

You see, clear this up for me, if you were accepted for SEAS ED, then why 10 days later you were still inquiring about Cornell's mailing address? And i thought you were going for Carnegie Mellon?

:) you fascinate me and my extreme boredom.
I'm really not this straightforward, sometimes I'm sarcastic.

I was wondering the same thing, Delfire. . . .
