I know that Columbia's ED program commits you to the school if you apply early; however, what is the general consensus when applying to additional early programs at public or private universities--UMich, UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill, UChicago. Could one apply to Columbia ED and Michigan EA, for example? And if this is possible, is it frowned upon or even noted by admissions at Michigan that you did indeed apply to school that, if you are accepted, you will attend?

Yes, and many students do. How would EA schools know that you applied ED elsewhere?

Michigan EA is non binding, and not the same as an early decision. It is simply submitting by an earlier date, and in most cases getting a decision by December 24. They don’t know where else you apply, nor do they care.

Not all EA schools are the same. Some will not allow you to apply to an ED school - I think Georgetown is one of those EA schools. Some EAs are single choice, so you wouldn’t be able to apply to other EA or ED schools. You are allowed to apply to your in state public school no matter what. If you can’t afford to attend your ED school you can always back out.
