Columbia Essays

Hey guys,

I was wondering if everyone here submitted two essays to the General Studies program? I submitted one and not the additional 500 word essay. I'm wondering if it's possible for me to submit my second essay even though I already submitted the second part of application online already? I believe that I submitted a very strong autobiographical essay. Do you guys think this will against me that I only submitted one?

Thanks in advance.

I did not submit the optional essay and I was admitted.

I did not submit a second essay and was admitted as well! Good luck with everything!!!

I am a Regular Decision applicant for Fall 2010, and just met the June 1 deadline. I submitted the Autobiographical essay and nothing else. I felt the required essay prompt really allowed me to cover all I wanted to, and all the other pieces–multiple transcripts, recs, etc., told the rest of the story. I can’t imagine it would count against you. If this is really causing you angst, though, I will tell you that I had a recommender email her letter directly to a member of the admissions office staff, even though I had selected “Offline submission.” It was too late to change the preference within the online application system, but they were happy to accommodate the professor, which I thought was cool (and non-traditional of them ;). So chances are, you could give a call and they’d take the additional statement. GL!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I know I’m being overly worrisome.

Sally, the GS administration ended up being as you said very accommodating by allowing me to mail in my second essay along with some other materials I needed to send in. Now the only thing I’m worried about was if I wrote enough about why GS was a place for me. All I said was I wanted to goto General studies because it welcomes non-traditional students and then went on to talk about specifically how Columbia University meets my academic needs and how the University can help foster my future career.

I submitted only the single main essay and was admitted. Word count was just under the max (~1900 words). Like Sally, that was enough to “tell me story.”

Hi Rossi,

Are you RD and when did you submit?

Thank you,
