Columbia GS Fall 2019 Early/Regular Decision Thread

@michaelscarn1 are you in the tri-state area? I live in NYC so I was expecting an interview but it seems like I won’t be getting one.

@Snekfest Nice GPA!

@incomingvbied I don’t live in the tristate area though I’m originally from NYC. I’m actually stationed in Hawaii so I did the interview over the phone.

Just submitted my application and all materials today. Good luck to everyone! I know we will all get in!

Hi everyone!! Happy to see this thread.
I’m an international student (direct admission) applying Early Action. I just submitted my application yesterday and now I’m counting the days ? any other internationals here?

3.6 GPA, took a gap year after high school, have some cool internships and work experiences, and top LORs @incomingvbied

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone else is submitting SAT scores that are over 8 years old? I got a email from admissions stating that my 9 year old SAT scores is fine to submit, but their website states otherwise (within 8 years). I tried to email and call(mailbox full) them to confirm this information 1 more time but no one has gotten back to me. Does anyone know the answer to this? Thanks !

@jennysong I didn’t submit SAT scores over 8 years old but if admissions say its OK I would submit them. I submitted SAT’s from 4 years ago after talking with someone from admissions. It seems like they’re not too important in the grand scheme of things but rather just a baseline.

Thank for the reply! I saw that you are a veteran too! Glad to see so many veterans applying to the school. I was a 68w in the Army for 4 years.

Looks like last year people had red x’s appear on their application portal before getting admitted, anyone see anything change yet?

@michaelscarn1 I also heard about the red x on the application portal. I have a feeling the red x appears on admitted students’ portals because the next step would be to submit official documents for actual enrollment? I feel like I’m going to lose my mind waiting for the decision to come out. Only about 24 hours left…

@michaelscarn1 I’ve read that too in previous threads but haven’t had any updates to my portal. Really looking forward to tomorrow

hey @michaelscarn1 do you mind sharing what your interview was about? I never heard anything back besides an email confirming i’d hear back by Mar 1 :’(

@michaelscarn1 I think this mostly happened for transfer students, also there were people that did not have a red x and still got admitted. Just so nobody worries because they don’t have a red x

@michaelscarn1 , @oatafix : Transfer student here in for Early Action, No red x or anything. Honestly it’s Columbia so not having my hopes too high.

@americanidiot here’s some I gathered from previous 2 year threads:
-why your major
-explain mindset of highschool ( or whenever in your academia your grades were mediocre)
-biggest challenge if you do get admitted?
-favorite books you read
-full time/part time?
-core curriculum

Not really sure about what is meant with the Core Curriculum as I just gathered these questions from previous interviews applicants had. GLHF EVERYONE, EXACTLY 24 hours from Early Decisions.

@snekfest Core Curriculum is the main curriculum a Columbia student must complete to graduate, regardless of major. These are classes usually in the arts (famously literature humanities), along with other courses. The theory is that it produces well-rounded students.

@americanidiot Snekfest basically hit it on the head as for what was covered during the interview. It was originally supposed to be with Matthew Rotstien, the director of admissions but ended up being changed to one of the other admissions committee members.

@incomingvbied definitely familiar with the core and even the books they read in the some of the classes. I just don’t know what exactly they are asking in terms of the core. So like general thoughts on having a core curriculum, favorite classes in the core or something like that?

@Snekfest ohh my bad, thought you meant what is it.

Very anxious for decision day… I read from last years thread a select few got phone calls in advance!

Don’t have any red x’s. Excited and nervous about tomorrow. Crossing my fingers for everyone!

@incomingvbied oh my not sure what is more enticing, the “New Update” button or a phone call…
