Hello,
I’m currently a Veteran that recently got accepted into Columbia GS and Fordham PCS. Both are great schools, and naturally I’m leaning towards Columbia; but am torn because of out-of-pocket tuition costs. Fordham PCS is covered completely under the Post 9/11 and Yellow Ribbon, but Columbia GS is not. Does anyone know what the average out-of-pocket is for a Columbia GSer for a full-time student? I am trying my best to mitigate unsightly debt; I plan to attend graduate school following my two or three years as an undergrad. Please help!
How much can you afford to pay. How much will yellow ribbon pay.
What is your EFC? Are you eligible for Pell or TAP?
your out of pocket cost will be COA- yellow ribbon monies -any entitlement aid that you are eligible to receive (will not include loans, because they have to be repaid)
Tuition at Columbia is ~ 52k a year. SInce you are still an undergrad (even though independent), you will not be able to borrow that kind of money without a co-signer.

If yellow ribbon will pay for fordham, then go to fordham

Exactly!!!
Do you know the rest of your financial aid package from Columbia? They can have great aid for students with need, so it’s important to compare packages. Is Columbia offering grants?
Columbia GS does not give the same financial aid nor do the have the same financial aid policies as Columbia College/Fu school of engineering. GS does not meet 100% demonstrated need. They are geared toward adult learners ( many people I know at GS are there through employer tuition reimbursement plans).
I would call the Veterans office for each school. The people can better answer the question and you maybe able to talk to another veteran who is in a similar situation.
I’m not able to get any financial aid, but learned that my our of pocket costs will be very low. Does anyone have any experiences with GS? I’m trying to get a feel for the place.
Hi happygilmor,
My name is Kat, and I am a tour guide for The School of General Studies. Since GS students come from a vast array of backgrounds and all have different financial situations, an average “out-of-pocket” amount isn’t necessarily the best way to gauge an individual situation. GS students are eligible for the GS scholarship, which takes into account need and academic merit. Veterans are eligible to use the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program. Furthermore, prospective students are always welcome to call the Office of Admissions at 212-854-2772 to discuss options.
Hope this helps!
