Columbia GS program

Is a BA degree from the Columbia University's GS program at a significant disadvangtage compared to traditional BA degree from a decent universities like GW,BostonU,UIUC? How are they treated for both law school admissions and job placement at a law firm?

remember that admissions to Columbia GS will be different than admissions from a traditional BA programs because GS is specifically for non-traditional students many who are older and have years of work experience under their belt already (and this is never a bad thing when it comes to law school admissions).

I am 24 years old now and ever since I have finished 42 credits from a community college two years ago I have been working full time for my business. This business is is 3 years old now and have been working on this since high school. So, I think I will qualify for the program. I just wanted to know if there are any disadvantages given to GS degrees for law school admission sor for a job at a law firm.

"So, I think I will qualify for the program."

Columbia GS is not easy to get into; in other words, it is not a backdoor entry to Columbia. You will be, if admitted, in the same classes with some of the best students in the world, so you must be ready to be graded on a curve against them.

So, no, if you can get in--it would not be a disad.

why do people believe that they must embellish their situation instead of simply telling the truth (this is why you will always be put out there on blast)? unless the Op is aging faster than the rest of us, on 1/12/07 Op wrote:

I am 21 years old transfer applicant, and I would like to know what kind of chances i have at U chicago. I only have 3.2 from cc in chicago surburb (completed 50 credits). SAT which I have taken about 3 years ago scored 1100. I have been heavily participating in family business with significant results. My current choices are UIUC, loyola, GW, Syracuse. But I would like to stay in chicago area and would like to know if I have a bit of chance to go to U of chicago. If there is anyways please let me know. Any word of advice is welcomed.

It must be really something to age a year a month (at this rate you'll be a senior citizen in the fall and most of this will be moot).
However, if this is your situation, then you will most likely not get into Columbia GS as wildflower mention, you will be viewed as trying to back door into columbia (also keep in mind that misrepresentation is grounds for immediate dismissal or rescinding your degree).

Sybbie719, I am sorry to confuse you or any other people in this tread (of course, the ones who even care), I actually use this account(sunada777) with my brother who is actually 21 years old and he is in a pretty much same situation, only he is younger and have more options. He has been constently knocking on college doors since last year and thus he was pretty active in this site. My situation is different, I am in a major position of the company and therefore, college is a luxuary that I have to trade with very imporatant things in my life.
That being said, I would greatly appreciate if I can hear some experienced and/or knowledgable opinions from an objective perspective.

In addition, I have absolutely no intention of using the GS program of a certain institution as a "backdoor" to their highly competitive admissions. I am not even sure if it would be approperiate to describe that as a "backdoor" since there are many people, even in this site, who are utilizing the opportunities that the colleges has to offer for people who did not have the same opportunity from the beginning.

GS will want to look at your grades and your resume. Your personal statement and why you want to attend GS is going to carry a lot of weight. One of the disadvantages as I see it will be your age (average age for GS is 29) as students at GS are considerably older and have more work experience. Don't know what your grades look like (since you said the information listed is your brothers) aand only you can decide if it is to your advantage to take the SAT/ACT.

"I have absolutely no intention of using the GS program of a certain institution as a "backdoor"

To reiterate my point; It doesn't matter what your intentions are. What matters is if you will be able to compete with Columbia College students. Keep that in mind. If you think so, go for it. Let Columbia decide. But consider yourself warned. You may get a Columbia degree but preclude yourself from a top law school degree.

And, you know, it's not the first time I see the "oh, 23 people use my account...that explains for the post disparity". Let's face it. It is unlikely you use the same email account. And it is not that hard to open your own CC account. However, for the sake of morality, I am all about giving people the benefit of the doubt. But it behooves you to have your own account...the only people who give valuable advice are skeptics, and tend to want to have a feel for the OPoster...when somethings smells weird it may hurt your chances of getting good advice.

"preclude yourself from a top law school degree"

Why is that?

if you can't compete and get a high gpa buddy, nothing else matters.
