Columbia GS v.s. RUTGERS

Hi all,

I recently unexpectedly got accepted to enroll at Columbia School of General Studies. At first, I was happy and now feel anxious about a possible debt of $80,000 for a Bachelor. However, I do want to write a publish a book regrading my awful life experience. Columbia seems to be a better leverage for potential writers. On the other hand, Rutgers offers me a full ride, and its writing program is also rigorous.

I thought that attending Rutgers is financially wise. However, it is my comfort zone. All of my friends are going to Rutgers, and my families are literally 15 mins away from it. By attending Columbia, I think I can discovery myself to the uttermost. Isn't New York city is a great place for writers and thinkers. What is your opinion about this dilemma?

Thank you

Did you receive your financial aid package from GS? If not, I would wait until you have all of the info before making a decision.

I do believe that it is a personal choice - Rutgers for free is great, but Columbia is Columbia. I do believe that NYC is superior in terms of opportunity at your doorstep while Rutgers will entail a bit more work in the networking department.

Were you EA or regular decision?

Thank you for replying.

I applied for EA decision and received financial aid package from GS. All of my grants are about $15,000 which is literally nothing in compare with $48k tuition plus housing and food in NYC.

It is true that NYC is extremely convenient for interships and networking, which is a plus of Columbia. However, I am leaning toward Rutgers now because help should be available at RU and because Columbia debt is a hold-back for me in 10 years, which I can do a lots more things instead of working hard just to pay the loans.

I thought about potentially meeting a future US president or senator at Columbia is possible, but now I feel like Rutgers’s free ride overweight the Columbia fame.

Rutgers is a great school. Maybe go to Columbia for your graduate degree?

Exactly! the debt is not worthy for a bachelor. Thank you
