Can anyone tell me more about it? Examples would be the 'reputation' and is it coed by room or floor, whats the policy on overnight guests, etc.

Columbia hall is suites, pretty sure co-ed by suite…look at [University Housing - Virtual Tour - Columbia Hall](<a href=“Residence Halls - Housing | University of South Carolina”>Residence Halls - Housing | University of South Carolina) for details and pictures.

If you’re talking about opposite sex, then according to housing site, “In general, however, most halls that first-year students live in operate under “Plan B” which means all guests of the opposite gender must be signed in after 10 a.m. and must be out of the building by 2 a.m. that night.” Hall can vote to change to policy that I think allows opposite sex for entire weekend. It does note that roommates should discuss frequency, etc of overnight friends/guests and that should be included in roommate contracts. Your roommate contract trumps USC policy.

^Well it trumps it in one sense. But there are absolutely no opposite sex overnight visits first semester in freshmen dorms, so even if your roommate contract says it is okay, it still can’t happen.

Halls aren’t allowed to change the policy until second semester. And most dorms do it by floor. Smaller ones do it by the whole building.

All of the co-ed dorms at USC (except for Bates and South Tower) do co-ed by suite. I lived in Maxcy my freshman year, and on my left and the four rooms across the hall were all guys. It made for an interesting experience.

I’m pretty sure South Tower is now by floor and I’ve never been to Bates, but I’ve heard it’s by floor and whether it’s A, B, or C. But I’m not totally sure about that.

Columbia Hall is definitely known as a party dorm. It’s one of the closest to Five Points. People will tell you it has a great location, but I’m sure that title will start to fade when the BA moves onto the other side of the campus. I lived in Woodrow (directly across the street from Russel House… really dead center of campus) and it was still a good 10 minute walk to Columbia Hall.

Two pluses: It’s right beside Capstone, so there’s Gibbes and it has a classroom, so if someone can land U101 in there, that’d be an easy commute. (I actually had U101 in there.)

Sorry if I was confusing…the part about roommate contract trumping policy was in terms of being more restrictive. As in even if floor allows overnight opposite sex guests you and roomie can agree not to.

there are ways around the policy. On co ed halls, you could have your female friend sign in your girlfriend for the night (which is allowed) but instead of staying with that female friend, she stays with you.

Just have to communicate well with the roommate!

^Yep! That’s very true!

The most restrictive dorm next year will definitely be Patterson. The only all-male dorm doesn’t have a visitation policy. (It follows the same policy as apartment style dorms.) The rest of the Women’s Quad will be out next year, so Patterson means no guys on weekends and that actually often bleeds over into second semester, because so many girls sneak in guys during first semester, so the dorm gets put on probation.

Thanks for all the info, does cola hall come with a loft (?) or do you buy/rent one? And do they come with rails? I always fall out of bed and falling 6 feet-ish sounds unapealing!

you would have to rent or buy a loft. No one I heard of this year fell out of any.

If you rent or buy one you can get side rail. D2 knew someone at her school that fell out! D1 used one her freshman year until she got used to it but only partially lofted hers. Looks like you can raise the beds some which allows for good storage underneath if you don’t want to loft which is what D did last year.

I bought one from the company USC uses. It came with a side rail, so I never fell off.

I don’t think the ones that already come lofted have rails. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember ever seeing rails on my friend’s beds in Patterson.

^^the lofted beds in honors had rails but didn’t have to use them

If you fall out of bed a lot, why on earth would you want a loft???

Space!! Haha but i did make it seem like i fell out more than i actually do… Railings would prevent that though.
