i was recently told that interviews were given to people on the borderline level, and those who were overqualified or underqualified did not have to bother with interviews. can anyone confirm the validity of this?

i've never heard that. they told me that they only give them to people who are in areas where there is an alumnus available.

That couldn't be more false. Most of the interviews are done before Columbia even sits down and looks at the applications. Everyone who submits a Part I goes into the pool for an interview. There isn't time for someone to decide whether you're borderline and the interview you and then evaluate you again.
