Columbia; is it that expensive?

Is attending Columbia far more expensive than say attending Penn or any other colleges?

I haven't been accepted nor have I even applied, but just out of curiousity, just how expensive is Columbia life?

The tuition/boarding/etc fee seems to be in par with those of any other private colleges. Is it the 'social life' that can be costly?

It isn't significantly more. You're paying Columbia-subsidized housing prices, not NYC market prices. The restaurants in the Columbia area are relatively cheap compared to the rest of NYC (albeit, they all are bad; you get what you pay for). If you want to live the high life in NYC (going to clubs with expensive covers and with $15 beers, dining at Nobu and Per Se, etc.), then you better have rich parents.

Columbia could be cheaper in many ways. Getting a flight out of NYC to go home (if you live far away) is very easy. Getting out of Ithaca or Hannover is expensive.

^ yea thats so true. jetblue flys right out of kennedy...meanwhile you have to take a bus or something to boston or take a car up if you go to hanover.

it evens out.

Food prices around columbia are absolutely ridiculous....the restaurants are overpriced and bad and the supermarket sells everything at the highest price they can possibly charge. there r a few gems around here that have good food at decent prices....i'll let u guys figure those out on ur own.
