Columbia Likely Letters

@warlockoftheeast, do you think you’ll go to one of the admitted students weekends? I’ll be there for the 6/7th of April weekend. I’m excited to meet other prospective students! My financial aid information came in on monday, under what the NPC on the website said, and well within what’s affordable for my family. It’s a huge relief. I hope your aid packages come in favorably if you all applied for them.

Anyone received likely letter for Engineering ?

@pr4321 I did!

My aid package was absolutely terrible.

@magnificent6 I’m sorry to hear that :confused: was it around the NPC or completely off base? You might be able to talk to the aid office

@neuromajor Well the thing is, my custodial parent’s income and assets would give me full aid. However, my custodial parent makes a lot, and that is probably what screwed it up. They gave me no financial aid only work-study. However, if I use the princeton net price calculator, the only one that takes into account noncustodial parents, it says that I would receive 48k in grants. So idk how Columbia could be so far off. I sent them an e-mail clarifying my Noncustodial’s new income and the fact that he currently has cancer and on medical leave. But at 67,000, I can’t afford Columbia. Any recommendations?

Absolutely talk to the financial aid office, they tend to be really accommodating to situations such as your own. See if you can set up a phone meeting

@neuromajor I just received a reply e-mail and was told to send in some information after decisions are mailed out. I am going to schedule a meeting time for when I go to Columbia college days. Thanks for your help.

@magnificent6 that’s wonderful, seeing them in person is always the best option. They tend to be lenient (especially with their likely letter admits, they already want you), as well if you bring some form of proof of the new financial state it couldn’t hurt. Columbia does use both the custodial and non-custodial incomes/assets, so when you run the NPC do make sure both parents are accounted for at their current income levels.

Anyone here from East Asian Countries like Japan or Korea?

I was named a John Jay Scholar. Can anyone tell me exactly what this program consists of? The letter was slightly vague.

@confusedhexagon: appending this post to a thread about likely letters is a sure way to have it ignored. Start a new thread. Congrats, BTW

Got one 9 days ago! International here!

My son is a John Jay Scholar - it is a huge honor (less than 10% of accepted students) and a big deal since it means you get part of your work-study waived if you attend cool lectures/events - stuff that you’d go out of your way to try to do otherwise. He got his likely letter a few years ago (he is finishing Jr year now) and several of his closest friends are those he met at JJ events.

Congrats!

I was nominated for the Egleston Scholar program after receiving my likely letter - does anyone know how the selection process for the Egleston works (how many students are nominated, etc.)?

Thanks! And congrats to everyone else who received a likely!

Did any ED applicants get nominated for Egleston Scholar? Do ED applicants get nominated for any named scholar?

When does Columbia usually send out likely letters? I heard of people getting them right before spring break. That’s like middle of March, right? I wasn’t offered an interview at all (probably because I live in an obscure state, where they only accept like 2 people per year), so I was getting a bit fidgety…

btw, @ProximaCentauri‌ What do you mean by 9 days to go? Is March 9th a special day? Just curious.

@digony‌
Oops, did I say 9 days to go in the other forum? I meant 9 days ago (wasn’t thinking when typing…). So now it’s about two weeks ago; the exact date would be Feb 20th my time, about Feb 19th EST.
It was totally unexpected though, and to quote someone’s post: “no rational person would sit around waiting for one [likely letter]” (except if you’re an athlete, I suppose).
So keep the spirits up! And FYI, Columbia, and supposedly all Ivies, would release their decisions on the 31st of March, EST, this year.

@3puppies‌
Great to hear about you S!
I didn’t get a scholar nomination with my likely letter. Is it still possible for me to receive one in the official admission notice?

@beccaboo96‌
How long after?
