Does Columbia give out likely letters to non-athletes...so far I've heard Dartmouth and Yale do. Anybody know??

i got one from SEAS. i dont think the college does it tho

I never got one when I was admitted to SEAS. What does it say on the likely letter?

its sent out like early feb. just says you have been marked as a "likely" candidate for admission, says congrats and keep up the hard work....nothing really important, i think they just want you to know that you will probably get in so you will consider them more

A likely letter says something like, "Although the Ivy League cannot sent out acceptances until April 1, I wanted you to know that it is LIKELY that you will gain admission to Columbia when final decisions are mailed later this month."

when are likely letters sent out?

about how many people do the colleges send out these letters to? if i dont get one, is that a bad sign?

I haven't only noticed it on this board but on other boards too..why is everyone so incredibly obsessed with likely letters? It's enough just to get in! Why do people feel the need to be the top within the top? It seriously just weirds me out.

It's the timing issue. It cuts down the 4 month wait.

Also, in response to viva sweet love......if you are/feel you are one of the best of the best (I'm not saying I am) then you do want a likely letter to validate it. It's nice to have the college of your dreams give you a likely letter and basically let you know they also think you're the cream of the crop.

Well, your question in particular didn't weird me out. It's perfectly legitimate to want to know if likely letters are given out. You should just see at some of the other boards how much people clamor for it. :\

Columbia2002, that makes sense. I guess I shouldn't talk since I did ED and got to find out Dec. 7th so I really don't know what it's like to be waiting now.

my impression, based on nothing columbia-specific, is that likely letters are intended only for athletes and are based on coaches' sponsorship and advocacy to the admissions office, not on an admissions review of a portfolio.

Curious - when did you get it, and are you an athlete...only if you don't mind?

i'm not an athlete (at least not any sport columbia has a mens team for....mainly lacrosse....)

Skraylor -- are you a girl applying to SEAS?? I heard a lot of engineering schools send out likely letters to really good female students.

i'm fairly certain Skraylor already attends columbia.

read: MENS sport

and yes, i am referring to what i got last year

I've never heard of Columbia College sending out likely letters, unless it's to athletes.

I just got mine TODAY from Columbia College (undecided major) and I was NOT a recruited athlete (although I do play some varsity sports, I'm not recruit-level)

Mine must have been for academic/extracurricular then!

(oh, yeah, it was an email, not a letter, and I just noticed that this thread is a year old. Whoops!)

yeah, not only is this thread a year old - but in that time, I have learned differently from what I posted above. They do send out emails, to non-athletes.
