Columbia Medical School??

Hello guys, I wanted to apply here in the fall and I was wondering if Columbia had a medical school and how good/hard it is. Thanks.( I didnt want to google it cause I like personal responses instead) :D

of course it does.

That’s exactly the kind of behavior that gets you insulted and/or ignored on this board.

Columbia’s Medical School has like a 6% acceptance rate. I’m not kidding.

EVERY allopathic med school (in the US) has an acceptance rate that low

i’m assuming you are a high school student so it should be irrelevant to you whether or not columbia has a med school and whether it is “hard”

ya lol 10 char

In other news, Michael Jackson died a few days ago. I’m not kidding.

Columbia’s Medical School is ranked 8th in the nation(for research based universities)…really hard to get into…

Dropping in from student doctor network to give an answer. Columbia has an excellent medical school (it was my top choice and I’m attending this fall), which is actually ranked 10th in terms of research. As far as selectivity goes, yes all medical schools are very selective. However, some schools are not quite as selective, not even those in the top 10. For example, WashU has an acceptance rate of 12%.

^prob because of location. shame  the school itself is amazing for med

some people are turned off from the NY location. a friend of mine chose ucsf for her physical therapy program cause she didnt like NY. she liked columbia itself though. i tihnk she got turned off NYU for the same reason (loved both campuses though…)

I’m not sure if that comment about wanting to live in NYC was directed at me, but NYC was definitely a big plus for me. I’m big into the arts, so I look forward to the city. However, it was the atmosphere of P&S that really impressed me more than at Cornell and NYU, and even other non-NYC schools. Very diverse, very interesting group of kids. Good program as well, I love the additional time to do research and clinical education.

columbia med school students are notorious for being among the most (if not the most) cut throat. at one of my interviews (at another school) one girl commented about how she felt that competitive atmosphere at columbia. having been on that campus for the last two years it does seem like people are a bit too serious there and i’ve heard complaints about the overly competitive student body on several occasions.

either way, getting into columbia med school is no small feat …congrats and good luck to you

I guess I’ll see, but my gut tells me it was the right choice, regardless of competition (personally, I think any top school is going to highly competitive, unless you have a purely unranked and uncurved grading system where everyone could honor. Even then, it would probably still be competitive over AOA and such). What impressed me about the atmosphere was the overwhelming enthusiasm that students had. I never had more students barge into the adcom waiting area to praise their school. Maybe it was because coffee is more expensive in NYC than most places and the free coffee is much more tempting! :D

My daughter had the same experience as mmmcdowe at her interview and has a number of friends currently attending who say that they are getting alot out of the program and feel that the school works hard to encourage cooperation and congeniality. She also will be starting there in August. Med school is med school - there are going to be some people (hopefully not too many!) who are obnoxious in their need to show the world their intelligence.

As we speak I am sitting in a classroom at Columbia University taking a class in Biomedical Engineering (close enough). The Medical School here is one of the most prestigious in the country, in my opinion. The Professors are engaging (like the one right in front of me) and you have a plethora of resources at your disposal. Acceptance rate is in the single digits though, so good luck!

what are some things i should do to better my chances of getting in?

Affiliate yourself with the medical school. Make sure you can get a glowing rec from someone the adcom will recognize. Become an olympic athlete, chess grandmaster, actor, famous sports star, dancer, etc. :D

Alrighty thanks mmmcdowe.
