I'm trying to decide if I want to pursue a combined plan 3/2 course of study at either Columbia or Umich, in biomedical engineering. I'm a Michigan resident, so Umich would be much cheaper, but I'm quite enamored with the city of New York and Columbia specifically. Which would be a better choice?

I think since you probably want to go to grad school (you can't do much with a B.S. in biomedical engineering in the working world), college doesn't matter as much. Both are prestigious schools so go for the cheaper one and save up money for grad school...that is if money is an issue. If you're terribly rich, Columbia probably has more culture for you.

The Biomedical Engineering program at Columbia seems really hard (I have a lot of BME friends), so I'd say if you're looking for a good program, Columbia's seems pretty good (I'm in CC, so I don't really know from personal experience, just that the BMEs here are always really busy but all brilliant). + NYC is awesome!
