“All first-year students are expected to live on-campus”

[Housing & Dining | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/university/campus/housing.php)

I think I know a girl who’s a freshman and not living on campus. She could be a sophomore transfer, but I think she has a bunch of siblings she has to take care of a lot of the time, hence they let her stay @ home and commute. But yes, in the absence of serious extenuating circumstances, you do have to live on campus.

Perfect!
Thank you.

If you live within, I think 50 miles (some number around there), you’re allowed to commute, but you have to petition to do so. Otherwise, you’re expected to live on campus your first year.

Trust me, you’ll want to. Commuting sucks, and it’s awesome to live with your friends.

I live in brooklyn and I wanted to get away for college but Columbia is perfect for that!
I get to dorm there while still be close to the family and stuff.
