On their website, Columbia says they want the applicant to send all scores. They then say they only consider the best scores from each section.

This begs the question, if they only consider the best scores, then why bother asking for all of the scores?

P.S. I took the SAT 4 times, but ended up with a good superscore (2300)

Well… you can’t just send you Reading from the October SAT and then the Math from the May SAT, that isn’t possible. So you need to send all of them. So they can physically see them and assure that the superscore is correct.

They don’t take the best overall score (M+C+W) from just one test, that’s not what “best scores” means, if that’s confusing you.

Also - if you’re wondering why they need to know those lower grades at all, well - it’s progress and it can measure you’re dedication to studying, perhaps. Can’t be entirely sure there.

Hi Sheep! I think the schools that require all scores - Columbia, Yale, Penn, Cornell - state that they want to see how many times it took you to get those scores. They discourage taking the SATs more then 3 times and do not want kids to turn it into an ec. For example, some kids at my school took the SAT 5 times while others took the ACT every month until they received the scores they wanted. I see both points of view…is it fair that I took the SAT twice and SAT2 once and have my scores compared to people who had the time and money to take the SATs multiple times? Or should I have the choice to take it as many times as I want until I get the scores that I am satisfied with presenting to colleges? I’m lucky enough that I got 2300+ but what if I hadn’t? Would I take it again? I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

I took the SAT once in 7th grade, and I sent it in because for some reason it was on my collegeboard record. Columbia will recognize I took it in middle school and ignore it, right?

"Columbia’s Testing Policy for Score Choice

Applicants may select the Score Choice option for the SAT or choose to submit specific ACT composite scores. However, it should be noted that the application review process for Columbia College and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science is rooted in the belief that students are dynamic, multi-faceted individuals who cannot be defined by any single factor to determine their suitability for admission. When evaluating applicants, we consider only the highest testing results reported from individual sections of the SAT and the two highest required SAT Subject Tests or the highest Composite on the ACT, always seeking to give students the greatest opportunity to showcase their academic talents and hoping to make the testing experience as stress-free as possible. We encourage applicants to take those examinations no more than twice, but we do not penalize applicants for exceeding that recommendation."
