Columbia short answer questions

I realize that a lot of Columbia's short answer questions on Part II of the app limit you to only 300 characters. How bad would it be if you went over that by double? There are just things that I cannot fully express in pretty much two sentences.

Don't they cut you off on the app?

Unless you use the additional info part, you can CANNOT go over! How can you type 600 characters when they system allows 300? Hack their system??

Maybe the OP means the paper application, not the online one.

yeah i meant the paper one actually.

But Columbia specifically says you should use online application unless you do not have internet access.. which does not seem to be the case for you..

THEY dont have to know that ;D just kidding. if they entirely insist for me to use an online app, then so be it i guess.

Theres a reason why they limited it to 300. Not to be blunt, but common sense dictates that if they wanted to see more then they would've expanded the character limit. I also think someone here on the board gave an ancedote a while before about how a girl was deferred ED (but got in RD) because she didn't follow instructions, even though her app was fantastic... search for it if you don't believe me.

It's rather frustrating. I think one of the questions asks why Columbia is a good fit for you and it's hard to answer with a character limit. Really, you can only type in a few sentences when that kind of question in itself could be a whole essay topic.

^that suits me.. I would rather write less than more

yeah i agree...i feel like there's less of an expectation to be extremely creative. it's all about being concise and terse.

i just re-read my "Why Columbia" short answer and i noticed a little typo ... i wrote a fragment instead of a sentence, but it still makes sense. although it makes it a bit more terse. is this absolutely horrible?

^Hey, if The New York Times does it, then it doesn't have to be "absolutely horrible," especially if "it still makes sense."

haha, that's true.. lol thanks
