columbia:sophomore girl wanting to know chances

hi! I am a hispanic sophomore girl in a private catholic school in new york and i am wondering my chances at columbia, my dream school. (also NYU or barnard).

My gpa weighted is 3.7. I am 58 out of 446. i have been on the A honor roll since elementary school. I am on the principal's list. I am currently taking honors classes. For junior year i am going to take AP US history and college spanish honors. My PSAT score was 1470.(taking Sat prep courses). I am in advanced orchestra. I hae been playing the viola since the fourth grade. I have played at churches and at Six Flags. I have been attending NYSSMA since the fifth grade. my grade for NYSSMA was outstanding.

Extra curricular: spring track(jv), spanish club, student council, volunteer club, science club. going to run for vice president or secretary.
nominated for national youth leadership forum on medicine and who's who in america's high schools. Going to attend columbia honors science program.

That's all i can remember. I am also wondering about information on the gates millenium scholarship.

thanks

Much too early to tell. Get a 2200+ on the SAT. Leadership positions in clubs are best. Show a passion for something specific. Everyone gets nominated for who's who.

^Ditto above. We won't be able to tell you anything until most of junior year is over.

It's not much to early to tell in this case. The class rank will need to go considerably up, at the very least in the top 10%, preferably in the top 20. also, the psat is pretty low in general, the mean sat score for Columbia is above a 2100 i believe. Your extracurricular activities seem solid, definitely stay involved and get leadership roles. taking ap classes is excellent, be sure to maintain a very rigorous schedule. as far as for college, the national youth leadership and the who's who will not help with acceptance to college, i'm telling you now, so dont deposit any money for either. just focus on doing your absolute best junior year.

Thanks for answering. I am trying to increase my rank and so far i am taking SAT prep courses. But doesn't the national youth leadership forum show leadership? im just wondering.

umm i wouldnt really say it does because most often they send it to people whose names they get through the College Board Service. It would be more worthwhile to develop extracurricular activities or do a lot of community service during the summer than spend money on that.

oh alright. thanks

National Youth Leadership Forum is a scam. Anytime someone wants to do you an honor with a bill of a couple thousand dollars, you know they're full of it.
