Columbia Student Behavior --- Disgraceful

<p>I didn't realize Jon Stewart did a number on this issue. This was really on the daily show? Is there a YouTube link?</p>

<p>Anyway, I'm sure he was making a joke there (which, you know, happens every now and then =P). Columbia has a ridiculous percentage of jews, so that notion is fairly ludicrous.</p>

<p>Only one person need hold up a sign.</p>

<p>I think the poster meant Marvin Stewart, the Minutemen representative.</p>

<p>I also thought he meant Jon Stewart at first though, hehe. I'm kinda hoping he (or Colbert) will.</p>

<p>Actually I heard from someone else there was a Daily Show segment on this...</p>

<p>He means the token black guy named Stewart that introduced Gilchrist, proving that it's more than just aging white southerners interested in shooting dem hispanics at the border -- in a minute's notice. On Billy O, he said that the arabic writing stated something about the holocaust never taking place. Which we all know to be both true and accurate.</p>

<p>The Minutemen thing was indeed on the Daily Show tonight.</p>

<p>Jon Stewart sided with Sean Hannity for once, heh.</p>

<p>My Mom works @ Columbia and got this Email from Bollinger:</p>

<p>Dear fellow members of the Columbia community,</p>

<p>Columbia University has always been, and will always be, a place
where students and faculty engage directly with important public
issues. We are justifiably proud of the traditions here of
intellectual inquiry and vigorous debate. The disruption on
Wednesday night that resulted in the termination of an event
organized by the Columbia College Republicans in Lerner Hall
represents, in my judgment, one of the most serious breaches of
academic faith that can occur in a university such as ours.</p>

<p>Of course, the University is thoroughly investigating the incident,
and it is critically important not to prejudge the outcome of that
inquiry with respect to individuals. But, as we made clear in our
University statements on both Wednesday night and Thursday, we must
speak out to deplore a disruption that threatens the central
principle to which we are institutionally dedicated, namely to
respect the rights of others to express their views.</p>

<p>This is not complicated: Students and faculty have rights to invite
speakers to the campus. Others have rights to hear them. Those who
wish to protest have rights to do so. No one, however, shall have
the right or the power to use the cover of protest to silence
speakers. This is a sacrosanct and inviolable principle.</p>

<p>It is unacceptable to seek to deprive another person of his or her
right of expression through actions such as taking a stage and
interrupting a speech. We rightly have a visceral rejection of
this behavior, because we all sense how easy it is to slide from
our collective commitment to the hard work of intellectual
confrontation to the easy path of physical brutishness. When the
latter happens, we know instinctively we are all threatened.</p>

<p>We have extensive University policies governing the actions of
members of this community with respect to free speech and the
conduct of campus events. Administrators began identifying those
involved in the incident as it transpired and continue to
investigate specific violations of University policies to ensure
full accountability by those found to be responsible.</p>

<p>University personnel are also evaluating event management practices
that are specifically intended to help event organizers,
participants, and protestors maintain a safe environment in which
to engage in meaningful and sometimes contentious debate across the
spectrum of academic and political issues. These are some of the
many steps we intend to take in the weeks ahead to address this
matter in our community.</p>

<p>Let me reaffirm: In a society committed to free speech, there will
inevitably be times when speakers use words that anger, provoke,
and even cause pain. Then, more than ever, we are called on to
maintain our courage to confront bad words with better words. That
is the hallmark of a university and of our democratic society. It
is also one of our central safeguards against the impulses of
intolerance that always threaten to engulf our commitment to proper
respect for every person.</p>

<p>Sincerely,</p>

<p>Lee C. Bollinger</p>

<p>That's the SECOND time in this thread that the complete text of that statement was posted. See: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=3025407&postcount=38%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=3025407&postcount=38&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p>

<p>What will be interesting to see is whether there are any firm actions taken to follow up on all the fine words.</p>

<p>As to actions, I'm sure we can expect some firm slaps on the wrist for any students involved, and some Persona Non Grata notices going out to the security officers for each non-student protester at the event. And the College Republicans will probably prearrange security next time they have something like this.</p>

<p>In all seriousness, this all never would've happened if the Columbia Political Union was in charge. They know how to handle controversial stuff.</p>

<p>It is certainly clear now - if it wasn't before - that any Republican-sponsored event on the Columbia campus will require police protection!</p>

<p>I guess CUCR has been reading my posts.</p>

<p>New CUCR events policy:</p>

<hr>

<p>There is limited seating at the event location, and as such CUCR will be providing advance registration for this event through this online form for those individuals who wish to secure admission. Individuals should indicate whether or not they hold a currently-active CUID.</p>

<p>IMPORTANT
NO BAGS of any sort (including, but not limited to, backpacks, tote-bags, and purses) will be allowed into the event. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTION TO THIS POLICY. Individuals with questionable items will not be allowed admission to the event, and as such should plan accordingly to store their personal belongings elsewhere for the duration of the event.</p>

<p>IF YOU ARE A CUID HOLDER
- You may use this registration form to obtain one (1) ticket in advance.
- You may alternatively show up on the day of the event, where remaining tickets will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis, according to how much seating remains, approximately fourty-five (45) minutes before the start of the event.</p>

<p>IF YOU ARE NOT A CUID HOLDER
- You MUST use this registration form to obtain one (1) ticket in advance. Additional information will be provided through email.
- Due to campus security policy, tickets cannot be provided day-of to non-CUID holders.</p>

<p>TO ALL INDIVIDUALS
- If you wish to use this registration form, you must provide your complete name. Individuals holding tickets which do not match the name indicated on their ID will not be admitted.
- You must have a printed ticket, whether printed from RSVP or obtained day-of.
- You must provide either your Columbia ID (for CUID holders) or a government issued ID (for non-CUID holders).
- You may not bring any additional materials or items into the event location.
- Any individual not meeting these requirements will not be admitted, NO EXCEPTIONS.</p>

<p>As complex and forbidding a process as getting on a plane at London Heathrow.</p>

<p>Apparently upwards of 50 who RSVP'd for the event were unexpectedly, and unexplainedly turned away. That and the fact that many student groups decided (sensibly this time, thank god) to protest the event by absenting themselves rendered the auditorium half empty.</p>

<p>Scandal is again brewing over mysterious fliers related to the event left in the offices of the Muslim Students' Association, however...</p>

<p>Columbia has been there since 1754. It's endowment is greater than some small country's GDP and its property worth more than the hard asset value of most publicly traded corporations so who gives a flip. It raised 1.4 billion before the official announcement of its fund raising campaign.</p>

<p>This will blow over and Bill O'reilly will still be a man who believes he can extract sexual favors for jobs.</p>

<p>In another 250 years if the world is still here, Columbia will be here as well.</p>

<p>That attitude, apparently, is the predominent one at Columbia these days.</p>

<p>Like Columbia 2002 knows Bollinger and can speak for him.</p>

<p>Again, like Columbia 2002 can speak for Bollinger.</p>

<p>She speaks for the admissions committee and now the President of Columbia University.</p>

<p>Gee, if she's so connected what's she doing posting her in all her free time.</p>

<p>I think its quite ironic when a group of people who claim to advocate free-speech and the rights of people who aren't even American citizens are not letting people that have different opinions exercise their right of free speech. Dont you think thats funny? It seems to be the popular thing to do today in the radical left.</p>

PrezBo has a good public image. He is seen as a modest public servant who shuns the camera.

</p>

<p>How's he a public servant? He runs a private corporation and makes $500K or so a year.</p>

<p>And Columbia2002 is a he, not a she. I think this is the second time I've had to point this out. It's' getting somewhat tiresome, people, and I really don't want to have to draw a diagram to explain the difference to anyone who doesn't understand that Columbia2002 is male.</p>
