Does this mean that we have to address only one quality of Columbia?

Or can we write about a three to four?

Any advice?

You can focus on everything that you find appealing, or just one thing. Just what do you want to go to Columbia for.

Just don’t write mainly Columbia’s membership in Ivy League or Columbia’s location in NYC. They are the very common topics which certainly will not help. You can perhaps mention NYC very briefly but try to mainly write about Columbia’s programs offer in your major, Columbia’s campus, Columbia’s accomplishment you admire in your field etc.

My suggestion is to write about one thing that you like about, but make it pretty narrow. If you like the fact that it’s in NYC, thats OK, but what do you like specifically about NYC? What sets NYC apart from other cities, in your mind? That’s how I approached this prompt, though it’s definitely up to you.

When I did it, I think I approached it slightly wrong. I wrote mainly about how, when I visited the campus, I felt an immediate sense of prestige and a feeling of being at home. I briefly mentioned talking to the Columbia basketball team whom I met on the subway that day, and their ranking as the Most Rigorous School, which I wanted. So… I mean. You can approach it several ways. You can focus on one thing and briefly mention other things (like I did) or focus on specific thing and elaborate heavily on that. I think going not too in-depth on several subjects wouldn’t be the best… But what do I know? I’m not an admissions person!
