Columbia Supplement

Does anyone know if there is a word limit on any of the interest or short answer questions??

Hey! There is a limit, but I think it actually might be character…

I emailed columbia they said 1500 character

When the app says 150 words, it means 150 for each of the 4 lists, right? (Not the 4 lists combined)

And I’ve seen some debate on this, but haven’t been able to find an answer: do you list the names of authors for the book lists? Some of the books I have read for pleasure are probably not so famous that they would be recognized by just the title, but listing the author does eat up words…

And finally, for “print or electronic publications,” must it be something official, like WSJ? If someone reads their town’s online Patch, would it be unwise/unprofessional to list that? What about a student-run publication, like the NJCL Torch?

(Sorry for hijacking your thread, I just thought others who were working on supplements might have the same questions!)

It is 1500 characters for each individual section which is about 200 words. I think that if you use about 10 words about the book and author you should have plenty of room because you aren’t going to put 20 books.

About the patch question I would add it. They are trying to get a look at your interests, not just what you read academically.

If you have specific questions I would email them. They like your interest and they replied to me within the same day.

Thanks for the advice - I emailed them and they got back to me, mostly saying that they cannot answer what should be included in the lists.

They didn’t give any response to whether or not authors should be included (I think I will go ahead and include since the list is supposed to be only the works I most enjoyed, not a smattering of everything I read so space shouldn’t be an issue) but if an admitted student could give input on what they did, that would be awesome.

Where can I find the supplement?

On the website and should be on the common app in a few days
