Hey guys. I am currently a freshman at the University of Hawaii and applied for transfer admission into Columbia College for Fall 2007. I was wondering if my stats give me a shot at acceptance. It seems like the competition for transfer admission is even more competitive than freshman admissions. Anyways, here are my stats:

Spring 2007 Courses:
-Multivariable Calculus Honors
-Intro to Differential Equations
-General Physics I (Mechanics)
-Psychology 100

College Extracurriculars:
-Treasurer for Pi Sigma Epsilon (Sales and Marketing Fraternity)
-Piano (for 7 years)
-Independent Stock Trading (I have about a 35% return since I started back in summer 2005)

I applied to the College as a Mathematics with specialization in economics major. Do my credentials give me any hope for Columbia? Anyways, any feedback is appreciated. Best of luck to all other Columbia transfer applicants out there.

I also applied for the Math-Econ major as well as East Asian studies major (intending on using econometric analysis to study China's development). Your stats are good. Are they Columbia good? Who knows.

I think when anyone posts a "chances" thread they are really doing it for one thing: peace of mind. Although I can't give you that without lying to you by saying that you are a guaranteed admit at Columbia, I can tell you that you are clearly talented and motivated enough to be successful, no matter where you go.

So even if Columbia doesn't work out, you still have a lot of great things to offer. Good luck!

I think I do...they're not really. Just preparing you for the truth: the acceptance rate for transfers at Columbia last year was 5% and your test scores place you almost in the bottom quartile of accepted freshman; as you are applying for sophomore standing, your test scores and HS stats will still carry significant weight. In addition, your 3.7 is good but you are attempting to transfer from a non-peer school so your GPA will probably be considered lower than what they like to see. However, you do have an excellent courseload in my opinion and the fact that you're a math major should hopefully give you some leeway.

Of course, no one knows until decisions come out, but I think it'll be tough for you as well as the 900+ other applicants.

High School GPA? (like brand_182 said, it will play a significant factor due to the fact that you're applying for sophomore standing)

If I had to give you a clear answer right here and right now, I'm sorry to say but I doubt you'll be admitted. My saludatorian (4.0 GPA for four yrs of hs out of a class of 312 with as many APs as possible) was rejected. Furthermore, transfer admission is more difficult. Collegeboard stats for last year:

Total number of transfer students who applied: 1,223
Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 78

Maintain that 3.7+ GPA for another year and I think you'd have a good shot.

Hey thanks guys for the input. Yeah I'm really disappointed with my SAT scores. God I just wish Columbia could accept a little more applicants =. I don't mind reapplying next year, but the only thing that I am worrying about is if all my courses will transfer over if i were to be accepted to Columbia next year. The math courses I will be taking next semester will be pretty much junior and maybe senior level, and I know that most schools don't accept transfer credit for junior and senior level classes becuase they want those courses to be completed at their institutions, unless I am mistaken. Anyways, thanks again guys and good luck with all of your applications.

laneb2005, are you applying for sophomore or junior standing? Which school are you transferring from? I am so disappointed with my school's undergraduate economics program. Calculus I is like the highest level of math required for undergrad econ classes. That's pretty neat that you're interested in econometrics. I can't wait until I can take a course in econometrics. Good luck to you with Columbia!

are you applying anywhere else doyama? also, if you ever had an interest in engineering and just really love columbia, FU is not nearly as insanely difficult to get accepted into (accepts something like 25% of transfers) and you'd still be at columbia.

Yeah I was about to apply to Fu actually as an applied math major. But then I thought that my science sat II scores weren't high enough despite the fact that Fu does have a higher acceptance rate. I think I'll apply to Fu next year though if i don't get into Columbia this year (most likely the case lol).
