Hi,
Does anyone know how good is Columbia/U Penn/Cornel for Engineering (undergrad)? I used to think that these are some of the best in the country since getting into these Ivies is very very difficult.

But in the national rankings for Engg, Coumbia & U Penn are not there even in top 20. Please check the follwing.

Am I missing something here? I undestand, MIT, Caltech & Stanford are top schools. But in the yop 10, they have Michigan, Georgia Tech, Cornegie Mellon etc, but not Columbia, U Penn & Princeton. Not even in top 20 schools, they have bunch of public schools such as Purdue, UC Burkley, Univ of Illinois etc.

I am interested in Engineering. Which school is better in terms of opportunities for internships, jobs etc.

Columbia/Cornell/Penn
or
U of Michigan, CMU, U of Illinois etc?

I am confident of getting admission in later list but not so sure of getting in Ivies, I have a chance in these Ivies especially Cornel & Penn if I apply ED, but my chance would be much higher in the above mentioned public schools.
Thanks for your help.

On this list they have Columbia and Princeton in the top 20 and Cornell is 10th. College rankings change year to year and from website to website. Just because a school is public doesn’t mean it can’t be a great school.
Columbia has a lot of opportunities for undergrad engineers. I know nothing about the other schools though I would imagine Penn and Cornell would offer a lot of opportunities as well, but they would be different.

arcfromconn,
When you talk of UMich, UC Berkley, they are comparable schools to IVY league for a motivated student in almost all areas and definitely better in engineering and only MIT and Caltech are the benchmarks for engineering and not IVY league schools (except may be Cornell?). No need to get surprised there. Tradionally IVY league schools were meant to provide liberal arts education at undergraduate level in creating /training broad thinkers , but in today’s world professional education has gained as much importance and IVY league schools are are playing the catch up. Of course when it comes to post graduate education in law, medicine and business, they are top notch. Even there, UMich and Berkeley and the like will be as good.

Columbia and Cornell might not be do the best in engineering rankings, but they easily beat out those other schools when it comes to post-undergrad opportunities.

Cornell has a very good engineering school. Columbia and Penn have good schools that probably squeak into the top 20, but are not the best by any means. The best engineering schools are MIT, CalTech, Stanford, Berkeley, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia Tech, UT-Austin, and Cornell. There are a lot of public schools that have great engineering schools. The Ivies are respectable when it comes to engineering, but they’re not the best.
